New show: Bokura ga Ita
I just started Bokura ga Ita and I love it so much I need to put it in my favorites! I actually started reading the first chapter of manga at first, but I decided it looks so cute I definitely need to watch the anime! I think I might read it later, but I am going to complete the anime first. The only thing I have to say against it is the opening. I say this because the first minute of the episode is very calming and sometimes sad, but then the opening suddenly plays and it blasts into my ear! But besides the audio adjusting, I love everything.
I'm suddenly into Romance again. SOMEONE HELP ME. I need to get back to Death Note...

A Winter 2017 Surprise - Youjo Senki
Well, I received a pleasant surprise with the first 2017 anime that I tried from my “hopeless” list - “Youjo Senki”. What we have here appeared at first glance to be yet another “cute girl” show but in reality is a very cynical and quite funny black comedy.
In an alternate world in the mid-1920s, a pre-WWI type of political situation in Europe has evolved into a war in which the Germany-type central power is under attack by all of its neighbours, similar to the situation of Prussia during the 7 Years War. While most of the technology of the war is at WWI level, there is no aviation but there is a militarized combat magic in its place. Parallel to the use of aviation at the start of WWI, the militarized magic is used mainly for observation and reconnaissance, but both sides are starting to learn how to use magic weapons for ground support as well as for anti-airmagic recon. Into this situation we are introduced to a very particular second lieutenant in the German Magic Air Corps, Tanya, who happens to be a 9 year old girl with exceptional powers. Tanya also has anything but a 9 year old's attitude and is much, much more than meets the eye.
The anime is adapted from a light novel which is also being adapted into a manga. The anime has taken an “in media res” approach to telling the story, which has bothered a number of light novel and manga readers, but I think that it worked quite well for the first episode. So I'm looking forward to the second episode and hoping that the animation team can keep up the good work.

Video of the week 09/01/2017
Now with the 2nd week and you can tell, I am still obsessed with Super Junior at the moment. Some people think that SM were holding back on the money when giving Super Junior a place to perform in the music video because it was just a white background. But I disagree, It made the music very chill and the vibe was very happy. I liked hustling doing my college work while listening to it, maybe next week will be more super junior, maybe not ;) Until next time.
Seeing as Konosuba has started their second season in Spring anime 2017, lets give them some love

Winter 2017 First Impressions Part II: Returning Shows & Shorts
Part II of my Winter 2017 First Impressions. This post focuses on returning shows and short series. For my thoughts on new shows such as Demi-chan wa Kataritai, Kobayashi-san chi no Maid Dragon, & Little Witch Academia, check out Part I of my first impressions.
This will be updated as I see more premieres. None of the scores I list are final; they are simply a numerical representation of how I felt about just the premiere.
Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2
It's good to see Konosuba again. In fact, I might be a lot more excited for this than I thought. I quite like the first season for its characters and comedy but something was holding it back for me. I think part of it is because that it is extremely mean spirited. The characters weren't really punished for their actions that much. And while the jokes are funny it felt a bit repetitive for me. In its defense however, it did seem like it was in the very early stages of the novels' story. Now that we're in the second season, things could really start to ramp up.
And I have to say, this is perhaps one, if not the funniest episode of Konosuba so far. Everything from Aqua's horrible plan to bust Kazuma out of jail to the lie detecting bell playing around with semantics was just great. Not to mention, it was great how almost every sleezy thing Kazuma has done is finally coming into fruition. Sure, Kazuma has been punished in the past but his trial really pits karma against him. It even lessens some of the meanness of Season 1 a bit for me. It's also a really effective way in recapping the first season in a quick and concise fashion. In case you forgot what crazy stuff these characters pulled, don't worry. Season 2 starts off by reminding you almost all of it and even makes fun of it.
Something I also took notice was the art. Maybe I should look back at Season 1 closer but something about Season 2 feels a lot rougher. Everyone makes even goofier faces, movement looks even whackier, and the fanservice is looking to be more explicit and ridiculous. Thing is, that roughness actually helped Season 1. I noticed that the light novels have a more pleasant look to it but I think the anime's rougher aesthetic complements the mean tone a bit more. It also makes fanservice seem sillier because characters look goofier in the show. Maybe Studio Deen actually has less money to budget around or maybe the art is rougher intentionally. Either, they're certainly rolling with this element that people, myself included, liked about Season 1.
Season 2 of Konosuba is off to a pretty great start. I thought Season 1 was pretty good but I have a hope that its successor will surpass it. I'm excited to see more of this.

Shorts:
Chiruran: Nibun no Ichi - I didn't realize that this is based on a gag manga spin-off of a more serious manga but knowing that now, I feel pretty compelled to pass on this show. I thought the super serious OP with the chibi faces was pretty funny but all the humor after that fell rather flat for me.

Chou Shounen Tanteidan Neo - I’m not too familiar with Edogawa Ranpo’s work though I got the impression that this anime isn't terribly interested in using that connection. It doesn't really feel like a mystery show either; it's just some dumb hijinks. Some of it is pretty funny and some of it not so much. This seems to be for kids so perhaps this is simply not for me.

Mori no Yousei: Kinoko no Musume - Upon reading the synopsis, I thought to myself, "Wow! Crunchyroll will take anything, huh?". I am under the assumption that this is one of those low-budget, improv anime I've heard about. I call it an assumption because details are rather scarce and it seems that the anime community didn't even hear about this until it was announced for simulcast. It is evidently not well animated or well acted but I honestly don't even know what exactly this show aims to do. Sometimes it is a poor fantasy comedy, sometimes it feels like a really boring infomercial. I'm honestly at a loss here.

Nyanko Days - When it comes to moe, I'm not a huge fan about personifying animals for the sake of cuteness. Not much happened in the first episode however apart from basic introductions so I can't really say if this is worth watching.

One Room – It finally happened. An romance anime without an insert male protagonist. Now viewers can appreciate their waifus up close and personal! In all seriousness, I don't really have any real objections about One Room's approach. I thought it was kind of cute and charming, possibly enough to be worthwhile. However, if you do want to do a POV kind of show, you really should stick to framing around that. One Room has a tendency to just show whatever shots that would appeal to the viewer's fancy. It'll show a close up of a girl's skirt but it'll never look like it is from a first-person perspective. Of course, a close up of a girl's skirt is really unnecessary but if One Room actually made it look like you are with the girl, it would be an intimate and impressive use of visual language.

Piace: Watashi no Italian – This was actually pretty decent. It moves at a very fast pace but it establishes the setting and the characters properly without feeling rushed. I like the setting of an Italian restaurant in a Japanese town and it could be fun to see the main character, Morina, interact with a culture she's unfamiliar with. Since it was setting things up, I didn't quite get to see much of the humor though I did love the bit where Morina still struggled understanding the menu even in Japanese. In my opinion, this was the most appealing of the short series this season.
