“Katsute Kami Datta Kemono-tachi e”, aka, “To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts” is based upon a manga series by Maybe that started just after Maybe finished “Dusk Maiden of Amnesia”. Maybe actually started two new manga series simultaneously at the end of Dusk Maiden and I felt at the time that he had probably split himself too thinly in doing this. I lost interest in both manga series fairly quickly (the second manga was “Kekkon Yubiwa Monogatari”, an isekai harem fantasy) but I decided to give the first episode of Abandoned a try just in case that the anime team might do something different and better with the story. Well, the anime team did do something different – they started the anime during the War that is in the past in the manga and only at the very end of the episode does the audience see the opening scene from the manga. However, this change didn’t make things better. The handling of the story in the anime was very clumsy and heavy-handed. There is too much exposition. There is too much overacting. There is no sense of subtlety. In any event, I saw no reason to expect that things will get better so I am dropping the series and my final rating is C.

Thoughts on the Four Rhythm (a.k.a. Aokana) VN and how it's a romance VN while the TV series isn't.

(originally posted in a thread about adaptation deviations from the source material) Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm (a.k.a. "Aokana: Four Rhythm Across the Blue") is originally a romance visual novel set against backdrop of characters engaging with each other in the fictional sport of Flying Circus. The lead character is a boy who has a history with the sport but who doesn't play anymore, and I think even in the VN he ends up coaching the other characters instead. And there are four romanceable girls (let's call them "new girl", "girl who plays for fun", "girl who tags along with girl B", and "freshman girl at neighboring but better school"). And yes, you can end up in bed with each of them. For the anime series... instead of picking a route, or making a harem story without picking a route, or picking a fifth route, or portraying multiple routes (a la Yosuga no Sora), the anime series just makes it not about romance altogether. There are possible hints of romance if you look for them, but they're very definitely not the focus. Instead, the series focuses on the sport. A lot of detail is shown of how the people approach the sport, the strategy involved, the various techniques they use and what those techniques are called and what effects they have, and so on. The story is primarily about the new girl discovering her love and talent for the sport, and how she faces and responds to the challenges and experiences of her life with the school's Flying Circus team. But the show also gives time to the male lead, exploring his personal history with the sport. And it also explores the journeys of the girl who plays for fun (how she responds to the pressures of competing), and the girl who tags along with aforementioned girl (who gradually developers her own enjoyment of and knack for the sport, growing more independent of her self-designated senpai). The girl from the neighboring school moves in next door to the male lead and gets a couple "accidentally naked" gag moments early on, but the bulk of her characterization is about her becoming a close friend of another one of the characters, and growing a camaraderie between the schools. And the other students from that girl's school, particularly their #1 and #2, are important characters, as well as the main school's team prez(?) and manager and also their teacher sponsor(?). And finally, there's eventually another character who is arguably added to the "harem" by the end that isn't actually a harem (because it's not a group of girls surrounding the male lead for romance purposes) but is actually just a group of FC players who feel strong bonds of friendship with each other such that they'd get together for a photo when hanging out. I really liked my journey through this. I legit want to get myself a pair of grav-shoes to play Flying Circus. It just feels so fun, in a very pleasant, happy way. I later discovered that the VN was a romance VN and I was downright confused, how could a romance story even make sense here, with this story and with these characters. It would feel shoehorned, in my opinion. I guess it's possible, obviously, but I think that that would feel tacked onto everything else that I know about this setting. And frankly speaking some of the characters seem a bit young for me to imagine them really getting so deep into romantic relationships -- on the other hand given their age I'd honestly more so expect them to behave like they did in the TV show (e.g. with the two underclass students from different schools becoming close friends). I can see a romance blooming between the male lead and some of these romanceable characters, but it would make more sense as either something that grows out of a more extensive personal relationship beyond the scope of this story (e.g. the male lead and the "new girl" becoming romantically involved after their coach/athlete relationship has become a thing they're both comfortable with), or a random factor like "one day I suddenly felt very attracted to you" and then stuff happens.

Posted on Facebook [24/2/2018]: Clannad, Clannad After Story Review A simultaneous microcosm and macrocosm. Even the greatest of stories have only one of the two. By these terms I mean, how the social life of Tomoya and all the people associated to him refer to the world itself, its hopes and destiny; and how the entire alternate world (the one with winter and small lights) refer to a single person Ushio and her relationship to her father. The small lights refer to the connections Tomoya had in the real world, after every good thing, there was a connection. Remember how in "Before Sunrise" the girl said if God exists it doesn't exist inside us, but in the connection or contact between us. This "contact" after every arc of Clannad resulted in the formation of those orbs of light. These formed the basis of Ushio's world. When she died, the whole world was destroyed but an alternate reality was shown where they all were happy. These contacts between people create newer universes with various probabilities. Hence, those orbs of light were all universes, each with a different kind of future. When Ushio travelled through the snow with that robot made of garbage (Tomoya with all his brokenness), they reached the point of that final orb or universe where at last they could all be together. Travelling through that snow implied how they had to go from universe to universe searching for the ideal one, collecting pieces of garbage (non-ideal universes, causing more brokenness) throughout the journey. Tomoya felt he shouldn't have communicated with Nagisa at all, but later he realized that those communications were what made all those alternate universes possible, hence he was happy at last, and accepted his life. Criticism The only reason why I am not rating Clannad higher, is because it is entirely centered to a family and school life. If the microcosm were a little more relevant, I think it could have been better. There were hardly any reference to historical, political, social circumstances, add to that Tomoya living in Nagisa's house. Nagisa's parents are too good to be true. Everything in this story was dream-like. Where is the harshness of reality? Except people's deaths, which is extremely normal, there was nothing shown. Well, it's supposed to be a SOL, so people who rate according to genre will obviously rate it high, but I am a little more critical with narratives, hence, I can't rate it higher than 9.935. Note There is a reason why the girl was able to make a robot out of garbage. But the robot couldn't make a single thing. Ushio was the one who brought life into Tomoya after Nagisa's death. But Tomoya wasn't able to bring Ushio or Nagisa back to life. Everything broke in his hands. Hence, he was the robot made of broken things, had life, but couldn't give life to anything. It is just like us, human beings, who can only destroy but cannot create anything living. Everything deteriorates in our hands. Our lives, our relations, our environment, everything. Among all hopes, Clannad After Story also had a very depressing message to provide. And that makes it a great work. [But not a masterpiece]. What Was New In Those Works? I don't really think Clannad was a SOL. All other elements were added to it to make the "central idea" clear. That is why everything seemed so dream-like. Because the reality that was shown to us was just one of several multiverse. The "central idea" is this alternate reality (the world of lights and snow), the world that can be travelled. This is so new. I mean, multiverse concept is old, school-life is old, family melodrama is old, a ghost that only some people can see is old, gang wars are old, girl whose parents left her alone is old, cat representing a person is old (Poe's Black Cat), etc. But this world containing various multiverses, made through the contact of each people, that is unique and new. The alternate reality, or this new world, was shown to us as formed by the contact of Ushio and Tomoya. ("I am this world.") And the lights were the result of contact with the various people that surrounded them. This makes Clannad a very high-level sci-fi. They created the very space where multiverse exist. The space that is created by the contact of two extremely close people. And the multiverse in that space created by further contact with others. This was truly admirable of Jun Maeda. FAQs Usually, people interpret the ending as hopes winning over fate, but that is not so: I don't think the orbs of light represented the wishes and hopes of people. That would be too simple. I believe it was the contact each character had with Tomoya that resulted in the formation of multiple universes. Ushio and Tomoya travelled through that alternate reality in search of that perfect universe (among all those multiverse) where they could all be alive and happy. Those orbs of light represented various universes with various futures. "Contact" only happens after something important occurs between people. Each arc of Clannad achieved that "contact". It ain't a simple physical contact, but a spiritual contact. (Hence, the supernatural elements in the cat and Fuuko -- they made no sane logic, but were necessary to make us believe not everything happens according to logic. And that's not a fault, but a very intelligent move on the author's part.) And anyway, how can wishes and hopes create a universe? That is totally non-sensical. And if that was so, why did Ushio and the garbage-robot travel that wintry landscape for so long. The hopes should have provided them a universe instantly! And when those orbs were formed, Nagisa was still alive, so what hopes can one be talking about here? Multiverse concept itself is based on the fact that whenever a person is faced with a choice, each of those choices create universes with each choice being taken and resulting in a different future. That is exactly the orb of light. It wasn't caused by the characters hoping for anything. Each choice formulated more and more universe, hence this contact with more and more people made the multiverse. That's why in the beginning Tomoya was shown as a recluse who never got into contact with anyone. Remember in the end, Ushio said "feelings", not "hopes" or "wishes". Feelings come from contact, communication. That itself results in the formation of a multiverse. "Choice" is the key-word. After that Tomoya saw a vision in his mind that Nagisa was saying not to forget her no matter what awaited them. Then, that hazy portion meant he was entering the ideal universe. He woke up beside Nagisa, but she didn't know anything about his journey with Ushio in that alternate reality, that was Ushio herself, it was that space between Tomoya and Ushio and all the multiverse caused by them. And finally because of Ushio's feelings and her destroying of that space (which contained all the other non-ideal universes) the final universe was filled with light. Hence, this became the one true future. And happy ending. Posted on Facebook [19/6/2019]: (This is about the Nanako scene from Persona 4. In fact, P4 builds on and perfects the ideas of Clannad. Plus a lot more.) Clannad After Story Part 2 xD Not just this scene, but certain ideas about bonds and connections are similar. Instead of those lights, we have arcanes here. Whereas that was about multiverse, this is more about socializing. Posted on Facebook [27/5/2018]: (Hunter x Hunter 2011 review) The first thing that will strike any reader/viewer of this manga/anime is its utterly disgusting premise. A boy whose father has abandoned him, yet one who expects his son to follow on his footsteps just as he has laid it out for him. We find this recurring theme of severed and mutilated family ties throughout the story, whether it's the second most important character, Killua, or someone not all that significant in the Chimera Ant arc as the don of an underground organization. Even Kurapika is out to avenge his clan who were wiped out by a secret organization who don't give a damn about killing people, yet make so much fuss when their own team members are killed. Even in the beginning of the anime, we find Hunter applicants dying just to clear one damn exam. The very ethics of this anime is fissured. Death is easier than clearing a game. But that's the point. All those episodes were just preparing us for the Chimera Ant arc where the queen ant can assimilate the characteristics of her prey to give birth to whole new species of ants. When she gives birth to human-like ants, they start behaving exactly like humans, to the very last characteristic. That's when the darkest of realities is portrayed. The inherent anarchy of humans were plaguing even the discipline-addict ants. HxH was definitely not a story of emotions or much relevance, till that arc came around. That was practically the most important arc in the whole history of anime. I was lauding Togashi for his imagination in creating such an anime, but this time, I just had to praise his vision. And what a dark vision of the world. Death didn't form any significance in this anime. It was all about the harshness and unfairness of life. There was one scene that particularly stayed with me. When Kurapika was returning from the auction carrying the Scarlet eyes only to hand it over to his master, that aghast look on his eyes. Even though the Troupe was actually not dead, but let's assume that. Kurapika has no purpose. That Don too had no purpose except to make all humans pay. Same goes for Killua, who was only living for his friend, Gon. Again, a pretty weird outlook on the concept of friendship. This anime is so much in contrast with usual shounen stuff, or any kind of story in fact, that at one point you would easily be inclined to discard it as an insane and bitter story with nothing of importance to tell you or make you grow. But that's where you'd be going wrong. This anime makes you reconsider your way of rating or criticizing a work. Every ideal you had in your balance is changed with something so real, you won't be able to stand it. And especially when, all throughout the anime, there won't be one moment, you would actually want to stop watching or actually feel disgusted at the moment. That will only happen after you have finished watching and thinking back on it. The story has a weird magic to it. It has everything to make it a simple shounen, yet it has nothing of the essence of a shounen. It makes you wonder how you can so easily adapt yourself to watch something so disgusting, until the actual realization kicks in. You are what they are portraying there: ethicless, purposeless, beyond cure and redemption. Posted on Facebook [27/6/2018]: How many of you actually see the resemblance of the 4th great ninja war of Naruto Shippuden and the last two episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion? The returning to the primal womb in NGE is the exact same thing as the returning of all chakra beings to the Divine Tree. The Mother of all creations or Kaguya. Obito Uchiha here is the same character that wants peace as Gendo Ikari wants all to return to the state of beginning. Destroying, manipulating whatever the hell they want to achieve their aim. Best antiheroes, here you have them. The point is, one succeeds, the other doesn’t. NGE achieves the aim. Though I’d have liked Rei to survive instead of Asuka, as that’d have led to a beginning with a hollow mother, or rather an empty Genesis, thus rendering (or rather, underlining) the meaninglessness of life. But that didn’t happen, which confuses me. Similar thing happened in NS. Team 7 saves the world. Or rather, humanity will not perish even if God needs to be sealed. There are many who say the war was one of the worst portions in the anime as there are many who say the last two episodes were over the top. But I believe the exact opposite. It was the war that made the greatest impact to NS. Every character coming back from the underworld, emphasizing the frailty of souls, the replaceable quality of all beings (remember Ritsuko and her mom?), and not to say of the White Zetsu, the ultimate example of the living dead (who could copy anyone's chakra). And the last two episodes were beyond perfection. NGE was a masterpiece even before those two. With its huge arrays of symbolism, there were so many philosophies being juggled I can’t even detail them right now, but I was in awe. And I got most of them, it was tremendous. And then came those two. Perfection over perfection. No doubt it’s the most debated anime of recent years. NS obviously plays the cards differently. With emphasis on the soul being carried by the one influenced by it, and not the one that was brought artificially by Kabuto’s jutsu. Thereby giving a positive aspect to the replaceability. (or should I say inheritance?) Well, my point is, it is important to analyze a work properly before putting forth an opinion of it. If you do not understand it, leave it or work hard to get it, don’t pretend to know it all, when you obviously do not. [continued later] Both are mines of ideas, one is just existentialist in nature, while the other is nihilist. Of course, NGE is finer because of the surrealist approach and having achieved so much in so little episodes compared to the huge number episodes of NS. But then, there was so much more in NS because of that length. It’s useless to compare which is better, as both of them had important things to impart, just in different ways. But I’d prefer NGE because of its release date, and concentration of plot. Posted on Facebook [21/7/2018]: (This is based on the idea of how Meruem takes in the consciousness of so many beings and becomes a higher being, like that primordial soup. But even then, ends up with an ego and falls for Komugi, and later dies a humane being.) the soul is inconsumable we can not eat something without isolating the soul from it first which takes us to the cause that the purpose is to make all souls one if we can't even make two souls one how can we make all and so the primordial womb is nothing but false hope nothing can ever fill the hole P. S.: Hunter x Hunter 2011's Chimera Ant arc tried to do exactly that but in the end, failed because of the humans. Humans don't want nothingness as shown in Neon Genesis Evangelion. They cherish individuality even if there is pain and that gaping hole of misunderstanding. [continued later] In NGE, we find everyone trying to fill their emptiness by trying to become one with others. Their perspective of the consciousness (or soul, if you like) was as if it were a clump of slime. The real consciousness is more like a piece of a puzzle. Each piece is part of one particular puzzle, which you cannot solve. Trying to bring other pieces of other puzzles in one work will only cause chaos and not understanding in any way. That's why the Primordial Soup is an impossibility. The soup is actually a puzzle with unfit pieces cluttered up. Individuality, emptiness, these are our only reality. There can be no empathy, and no oneness in anything. The utmost that can happen is a singularity, a black hole that will consume everything. But no understanding of any kind. And yes, each of our puzzles are bound to be incomplete, but doesn't mean we need to fill it towards stagnation. There are infinite possibilities. And Picasso's art is definitely an example of that kind. I watched Caligula some time back. Just realized it was also playing with a similar concept. When you reach this scene from ep 12, you'll realize what I'm trying to say. (The scene is when the other world disintegrates. The ideal world is nullified. "This is for the best.") The concept of diversity as opposed to uniformity regarding happiness, sadness and other psychological standpoints is something both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Caligula has explored. Also Naruto Shippuden and Hunter x Hunter incorporated such ideas and turned them to good use in The 4th Great Ninja War and The Chimera Ant arc. Even Psycho Pass is entirely based on that particular concept. And as you guessed it, The Matrix too. If you don't see the similarity then you didn't get any of these. XD Neon Genesis Evangelion -> Hametsu no Mars : Extremely poor copy. NGE is zillion times better. Neon Genesis Evangelion -> Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch : Only technically inspired by NGE. Concepts are entirely different. Naruto -> Hunter x Hunter (2011) : Naruto + Naruto Shippuden is basically Hunter x Hunter (2011) but better written. Akira -> Shinsekai Yori : The devastating aspects of psychic powers. The political turmoil resulting from such power. [Umm, how do I put it? If you've seen both series, you'll notice how "MU" defined happiness; Very similar to Obito's view of peace. It's a philosophical similarity rather than a surface similarity. Also if I wrote it like this it'd be a definite spoiler. That's why I wrote it like I wrote it. But if it doesn't meet the guidelines, I've no problem. You see, all these series I mentioned are interconnected by their philosophy rather than by their plot. I can understand how a shounen compared to a psy thriller might sound funny. But this wasn't a troll.] Posted on Facebook [15/1/2019]: I love how in Guilty Crown, they've used the term "void" for desire manifestations. Destroying the void kills the person. Destroying the void means filling one with meaning. And then there's a purpose to die. Desires are then not purpose, but rather a meaningless striving for something impossible. The "rock that started it all" works as a psychoanalytic device, intensifying the desires of a person. All kinds of complexes evolve in the person affected by it. They can even see the dark side of people. Mana/Eve is probably the most important character, representing the all-encompassing female fantasy, juxtaposed against the meekness (NGE's Shinji xD) of Shu, the male id. Also, the father figure is dead (ref to Blue Velvet). This rock basically frees the id, the superego is lost. As seen in Mana. As a constrast, Shu when he became a tyrant was completely overwhelmed by the superego. He lost his own identity. Inori (who became more substantial after she was filled with half of Mana's soul) again appears like Rei, a soulless being. Her fantasies, desires are all muddled (yet a freaking sword!) creating an almost surreal effect. When she lies, when she tells the truth, becomes a psychological concern (and the music, a philosophical one*) and throughout the anime, there isn't a single overstatement. Everything is kept as subtle as possible. I wish it was slightly more artistic like Bergman, but can't really blame them, they made it far more interesting than NGE, it'd be too much to ask them to be deeper. The role of memories and intense psychological study of so many characters, coupled with an intriguing political thriller, makes it an incredibly enjoyable watch (wish it had less fan service). There were a lot of plot twists and the cleverness of the plot (although sometimes felt too much) was what I had wanted for a long time. Pretty much the reason I hated Erased, albeit the suspense. All in all, it is very much deserving of a 9.953/10, can't really see the reason behind its low rates in MAL. Do watch. It's by Production I.G. of the NGE fame. *ref Tarkovsky; Zizek's ideas on Chaplin, Lynch, etc. Similar works: Parasyte, Monster, Berserk, NGE (Neon Genesis Evangelion), Code Geass, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, etc. P. S.: This review is for only until ep 16. After that, there are a lot of plot twists, don't wish to spoil. If we analyse the "void" philosophy further, we come to the conclusion that the only way to live is to transfer our desires to someone who can bear it. It gets pretty complex after that. Can't analyse in such short space. Posted on Facebook [after watching two episodes of C&T]: (Posted on MAL first but it got removed.) The Carole & Tuesday review that was taken down from MAL for being too early. xD Depth: 2/2 Importance: 2/2 Relevance: 2/2 Artistry: 1/2 Imagination: 1/2 Total: 8/10 Coming from the creator of Terror In Resonance, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, I was naturally pretty hyped for this. And it didn't disappoint at all. A futuristic society where music by AI have replaced music by humans. Just like Blade Runner, where the essence of humanity (memories, compassion, etc) is questioned, here also, the question settles on the warmth of music. Music is a humane art (the point of the story, I believe). Or at least, a living art (birds, insects, etc). But there is a catch here too. Because nature is full of music (clouds, rain, winds through leaves, etc). And as we have already come across the fact that robots/androids also have emotions (from Blade Runner), is their music really not comparable to human music? After all, since they do hit. But the antagonist here shows no warmth (unlike the alarm owl). He is unfeeling despite being human. Irony? The two protagonists, Carole and Tuesday, want to reach people through their human feelings. The first song itself is named, "The Loneliest Girl". A society with so much comfort, yet everyone is pretty disjoint, stealing, drinking, anonymous. Loneliness is dormant, has to be. People naturally cannot understand one another. But then that scene where Carole is singing (without words), but it reaches Tuesday, she cries. Reminds of "Everybody Wants Some!!" by Linklater, where the wisecracker talks about how humans could communicate psychically, but then all these civilization and practices have ruined the innate reaching out of humans. No one understands. No one really feels. That's why these days, depression and melancholy is so common. Carole's background is sad, she has always been lonely, in fact, more pronounced because she's an orphan. And Tuesday, although born in a rich family, is lonely because her dreams are not given importance. (Also noticed how both Angela and Carole are forced by their affluent mothers.) The real and the facade are juxtaposed with the innocent duo and Angela. Angela herself plays with her managers, then accuses Tao of being inhumane. She can't really sing, she only has glamour. But she wants to become a popular and successful singer. She will not work hard for it, but will depend on Tao for electronically engineered "best" songs. She is ready to become a marionette for this. What can be more relevant to music industries today? The indie duo with real, from-the-heart music has 0 followers on Instagram. :3 The art and animation is beautiful. Especially the opening is so artistic (impressionist, I think). The sparking brightness of light and the dark shadows creates a wonderful contrast which has pretty much become the natural style of modern anime. And what to say of the music, Watanabe is famous for his music choice, Springsteen's Born To Run is a rock and roll classic and Lauper's True Colours is a favourite of mine. The opening song merges melody and rap so beautifully, it touched me so bad. And it was about changing the world. :) Pic: A scene from the anime that alludes to The Shining. xD (Several interesting things happen in the anime later. But don't wish to spoil. Enjoy. Loved certain philosophies of the Mars' Brightest contestants.)
