"GOTF is not at all an anti-war anime and contains absolutely no such message."
-- Isao Takahata
As this is a common phrase thrown around on any discussion involving GOTF, I wanted to show through this entry what to think of this. Assuming this is a true statement of course (many people like me seem to have gotten this phrase from wiki).
First, I think there were external reasons why he would say this. I think declaring this film as an anti-war film during 1988 could hurt the ad campaign with political retaliation and scandals. Remember, during this time, Studio ghbli was more a children-friendly brand than it is now. "Anti-war" brings a lot of attention in light of war and cruelty--this might've hurt the brand so early in the game. Another is that Takahata's intention was more invigorating the youth by presenting the hardships that their predecessors had to endure. Perhaps to him, this message was more important that he didn't want to attract the wrong kind of attention from the film and undermine what he really wanted the audience to take away from.
Why I think it's okay to think of GOTF as anti-war film:
First, in my review, I don't actually stress this. I say it shows why wars are "problematic." Showing problems of X doesn't necessarily = you're anti-X. If anything, it's more healthy skepticism.
I think if you watch the film as an anti-war movie, it cures the ignorance that "anti-war in Japan" = "fuck USA." GOTF clearly did not take sides and numerously demonstrated many flaws of Japanese mindset and character in the film. When Takahata didn't want the movie to be perceived as anti-war, perhaps he really meant that he didn't want people to think the film takes moral sides or was being preachy. And it's not.
Lastly, and most important, I don't think everything a director says = iron clad opinion. In fact, no one's opinion is. As a work of art (which it definitely is), it's perfectly normal and okay to take away different meanings or messages that the director didn't have in mind. Perhaps it's the "Western" perspective, but even well-revered and respected critics like Roger Ebert clearly felt that GOTF had an anti-war sentiment. Of course, he was mature and wise enough to know that the film didn't bash on US and insulated Japan from criticism. The point of the film wasn't to instill hatred in anyone or any nation. In fact, that's one of the crucial themes of the movie: the danger with associating too much of your personal identity with nationalism.
Hopefully this cleared up some confusions about the film. I didn't love it as I'd hoped, but this film rightfully is an important, symbolic film with content to think about.

Steins;Gate Trivia (Things you might have missed)
So I love trivia. I find it entertaining to read things about shows or movies I didn't notice or just didn't know and so i decided to share some trivia with you guys about Steins;Gate.
Logo Trivia:
Look at the Steins;Gate logo.
The first thing to notice is the “i” in the fourth letter position. You should see the vertical string of numbers “0.571024.”
Those who have already played the game will surely have a light bulb moment and know what the numbers represent. Without giving away any spoilers, that string of numbers is the numerical value that designates the world line divergence after it is changed by main character Rintarō Okabe by using a certain device. “0.571024” represents the divergence at the beginning of the game.
However, the mystery doesn’t end there. Look again and you will notice several other hidden numbers.
Look closely at the “i.” Do you see the “1” and decimal point?
A “0” is hidden in the dot of the “i.”
A “4” is hidden in the bottom right of the “n” and an “8” is hidden in the left side of the “s.”
The “5” is easy to spot in the “G.”
A “9” and “6” are hidden in the “t” and “e,” respectively.
So another seven numbers are hidden within the logo. Individually, what the numbers are for is unclear, but when you put them together you get…
1.048596
That’s right, just like the first string of numbers, this represents a world line divergence. However, contrary to the first string, which represents the world line at the start of the game, this number string represents the “true ending” world line. In other words, this means that the beginning of the game all the way up to the true ending was all incorporated into the logo ahead of time. Is this too the will of Steins Gate?
Kurisu Trivia:
In the light novels and drama CDs, Kurisu is shown to be upset about her small bust size, to the point where she will angrily yell at people if they even allude to it.
In the anime Robotics;Notes during episode 15, Kurisu's @channel handle "KURI_KAME KuriGohan and Kamehameha" is seen posting on "Twipo" on December 20th, 2019 at 10:05 am about the differences between and limitations of 2D and 3D.
Kurisu is also a secret playable character in (Phantom Breaker EXTRA), In order to unlock her you have to get 15+ stars in battle situation mode using Ende.
Mayuri Trivia:
Mayuri's voice was used as a user guide for the Phone Microwave. According to Rintarou, it made the Microwave sound silly.
She was the first person to discover the Microwave's "irregular" abilities when she accidentally froze her chicken while trying to thaw it. She also gave the gel-i-fied bananas the name "gelbana".
So far, the only ending of the visual novel in which Mayuri's death is definite is Ruka's ending, as she survived in Faris's ending, Kurisu's ending (same thing applies to the True end), her own ending and Suzuha's ending (implied to have been saved through the combined efforts of Rintarou and Suzuha).
Also, Mayuri dies of natural causes if Ruka's ending was achieved. This is the one of two instances in the plot where the cause of Mayuri's death was not an accident/murder, the other being when she goes to ComiMa on the 16th after Ruka's mail is reversed.
According to Okabe, his first kiss was with Mayuri in elementary school, though they were "just messing around."
In one of the (failed) attempts to save Mayuri, Rintarou sent her to the past. However, instead of arriving normally, she dies and her body was gel-ified. This scene was only briefly shown in the anime.
The gel-ified Mayuri still resembles her normal form a great deal, as the details on her outfit along with the color of her hair are still visible and her body is not distorted in any way, unlike SERN's experiments.
Okarin Trivia:
In the Gamma World Line, Rintarou is a collaborator of SERN and becomes the dictator Hououin Kyouma, ruling over Japan with an iron fist.
The actions of the Council of 300 of the Steins;Gate World Line fit Okabe's delusions almost to the letter.
Rintarou's excessively paranoid attitude (not excluding any of the affiliated series, i.e. Chaos;Head) can be likened to the Postmodern man's paranoia towards government and terrorism.
The story references and builds upon the real "John Titor case" from the turn of the century. A mysterious Internet persona who posted on Internet message boards claiming to be a time traveler from the future. The CERN research institute and the IBM-5100 computer (dubbed SERN and IBN-5100 respectively) are also both real.
In the first episode we can hear a man scream before Okarin finds Kurisu dead. For those who have seen the last episode we learn that this scream belongs to Okarin when he stabs himself to bleed more. This allows us to draw the conclusion that Okarin never found Kurisu dead in the first episode and that the paradox of Okarin going back in to the past to fake her death was already happening from the start. Although in Okarin's plan to fake her death, he makes sure that his past self gets a green Upa instead of the metal Upa so that SERN never finds the time machine paper that she wrote. This means that Okarin never should have gotten the metal Upa in the first place.

I very ascetically pleasing anime, with pretty animation, follows a main character who becomes close friends so a girl when they were younger and follows their lives as they grow up, showing the series of events that push them apart.
Just finished it now and here are my thoughts,
Good motifs all the way through that constantly throw you back to certain scenes, also gives out information about the characters slowly enough to keep you in some suspense once you cut to the next time period to see how the characters have evolved.
Stays away from the stereo-typically anime endings where something happens to go right for the characters and you are constantly waiting for something dramatic to happen to suddenly change the plot line, and after watching it leaves you with a very realistic view on life, and how maybe you have to make things happen if you want a change.
Has very cute scenes if you love romance anime and even though we don't know everything about the characters in the anime, they reveal just enough so you can get a feel for each character.
Would recommend for an evening movie to joy

Arck whatever I give aldnoah zero 8 - both seasons. I mean it was a pretty good mech anime, character cast was kinda unusual etc itd itwn
You get the drill.
See - that's the problem with my ratings. "It was pretty good for its' kind" - for example I wouldn't use the same system to rate Nisekoi, TTGL and Psycho Pass. then there's the importance of the story; I mean there was A LOT of plotholes but the plot was there only as an excuse to fight, fight and fight again - and it wasn't bad at that, I guess. Animation was nice, sound wasn't bad either. Maybe I'll make that a 7 after all since nothing was outstanding - every aspect of this anime was good, but not very good...
I just don't know anymore lelel
I'll probably rethink every single rating on my list so far :T
