The Beginning
It is said that long ago, the world was a chaotic place where many different spirits roamed around freely and uncontrolled over the earth is empty surface. All of these spirits developed in different ways during the time that the earth began to take shape. Some of them became intertwined with the growing and evolving lifeforms on earth, others remained far from them. The more versatile the earth was becoming, the more versatile the spirits were becoming. Not much knowledge about the original forms of these spirits remains, but many of the strongest spirits still have different sorts of memories about it themselves.
There are three spirits from this period that will be particularly relevant to our story. The first is a spirit that is currently referred to as 'The Ancient One' by many shamans and soul-binders. It is known as a spirit of great power that only the most powerful individuals can contact and communicate with. Its wisdom and power is praised among all sorts of communities everywhere.
The second spirit is a spirit that is currently called 'Bloody Mary' whom is well known in folklore and horror stories due to its violent and bloody tendencies. Only a few humans know the truth about this spirit, for those who come to find it out often don't have much time left among the living.
The third and final spirit is known as Excalibur, a spirit known as a curse among shamans for its incredibly obnoxious behavior. However, this too is a spirit of great power. Its incredibly narcissistic behavior is based on its true potential, yet the world itself rejected this spirit its ability to interfere with anything directly.
By the time that the human race first emerged on the surface of the earth, the spirits were already great in number and versatility. Among these spirits were only few that actively sought out to interfere with human business, but there are some that ended up involving themselves with them. One of them was the spirit that would grow to be known as Bloody Mary.
Bloody Mary
The spirit that grew into the one known as Bloody Mary was not an evil spirit at first. In fact, it had originally shown nothing more than the honest desire to interact with the humans that it had seen wandering around the earth. The spirit its curiosity drove it to actively seek them out in an attempt to make contact with them. Sadly enough, the spirit was not able to do so, for the humans were unable to see or even sense its spiritual form.
For years, the spirit attempted to get its existence acknowledged by these beings that it had learned to like so much, yet it was all to no avail. Centuries later the spirit eventually snapped and tried to force a young boy to acknowledge its existence, which resulted in the young boy's death. At first, the spirit was shocked by its own deeds. However, as time went by the spirit started to realize the results of its deed. The death of the boy had shaken up the town greatly and had struck fear into each of the villagers. They were afraid of something... They were afraid of the spirit. The spirit realized this and the potential that this brought. Its existence could be acknowledge through its deeds.
At first, the spirit still tried to stop itself from killing more people. Sadly enough, people eventually began to forget all about the incident. This made the spirit grow incredibly restless. It wasn't long after the humans stopped talking about the incident entirely, that the spirit committed another murder. This started a cycle of murders that lead the spirit to a point where the sole acknowledgment of its existence relied on the fear it created by murdering humans.
As the humans developed themselves, the spirit developed itself. Rather than killing randomly, the spirit started to act on certain patterns that allowed its murders to be ascribed to the same spirit. Its existence was starting to be acknowledged in a variety of stories that told about it and its murders. Every murder it committed added to its bloody lore of existence. In a sense, the spirit grew addicted to this act of murder. Not only was this how this how the spirit affirmed its existence towards humans, the spirit came to see these murders as its own reason for existence. The bloody murders and its own existence became thoroughly intertwined and mutually affirmed each-other.
The spirit was already far in this state when a young girl named Mary-Ann had summoned it by calling out 'Bloody Mary' in a mirror three times. Out of all the lore that the spirit had created, this was spread the most and the easiest by far. It was the story that it would appear when the name 'Bloody Mary' was called in front of a mirror three times. This had also become the spirits its favorite story to act upon, and had therefore been the sole story it had acted on for centuries.
The girl, Mary-Ann, grew up as an orphan in the 15th century. She had been very mistreated and abused in her youth by those around her. Her life was further tormented by the fact that she was often ill and that many of the other orphans bullied her. They attempted to make their own situation seem less bad by bullying Mary-Ann. On her seventeenth birthday, she could think of nothing but suicide. She desired strongly for an end to her life of pain and suffering. This is the reason she decided to try to summon Bloody Mary. It was a newly spreading rumor at that time, but her summons were answered.
Against everything the spirit had anticipated, Mary-Ann was happy when the spirit killed her. The spirit had been the only thing that had ever listened to her in her entire life. The spirit had actually managed to come to her when she called it. Mary-Ann didn't care about her life anymore, she was overly happy that she had finally found someone that had been able to end her loneliness.
This reaction changed the spirit. It brought back some of its earlier desires to interact with humans and to be with them. It even felt strange forms of regret for its actions... This is why it took on the appearance of Mary-Ann by creating a body made out of glass. Mary-Ann's human body died in the spirits embrace, but her mind and soul merged with the spirit and a new body for her was formed in glass. The spirit lost an incredible amount of its power in this process, but the merging of their souls ended their mutual loneliness.
For a few years, the two of them were happy, they loved each-other and traveled the world together. The spirit had finally managed to find a way to be acknowledged by humans and to interact with them, while the human had finally been able to end her suffering and loneliness. Sadly enough, this is not where the story ends. For these years of happiness didn't last. The evil deeds committed by the spirit were slowly but steadily catching up to it. The spirit itself was slowly turning more and more evil and its desire to kill again grew stronger and stronger. Mary-Ann desperately tried to stop it, but she wasn't strong enough. The human part was suppressed and they turned into the Bloody Mary that is still known in contemporary folklore and internet horror. However, the story of Bloody Mary is not the only folklore and horror story that is based on actual facts. The story of 'Dr. Frankenstein' is the same.
The Original Dr. Frankenstein
Dr. Frankenstein is widely known for having created a living monster from dead body-parts. He is said to have lived somewhere in the 18th century, in the region of Geneva in Switzerland. Most of what he had done would have remained unknown to the world, if a woman named Mary Shelley wouldn't have written a novel that was heavily inspired by his work. She added a lot of things to the novel to add drama, but some of the key points were based on true facts. Dr. Victor Frankenstein had indeed managed to create a 'living' monster, but in reality it had been a lot less grotesque and dramatic than how it is described in her story.
This was partly due to the fact that there had been complications with Dr. Frankenstein his research and with the monster that had been the result of them. Part of these complications was that the monster its body-parts were rotting away, but the biggest problem was that the creature seemed to have no real mind or personality of its own. It simply stood still and stared blankly in front of him, It never did a single thing unless Dr. Frankenstein forced it, and even then it reacted in the most minimal ways. In the end, the monster was resembling an average doll a lot more closely than an actual life form. Shelly, being the dramatic writer that she was, had found this to be way too uninteresting. This is why she had based her story on the idea that 'The Monster' actually had intellect and personality.
The two main problems with the monster, the rotting body-parts and the complete lack of intellect and personality, caused Dr. Frankenstein to choose to destroy the monster by burning it completely. Afterwards, he decided to start experimenting again. However, he never managed to recreate the results of his first experiment. This also meant that he didn't even get close to creating something that would closer resemble an actual life form.
A few years after the creation and destruction of his monster, he got forced into an arranged marriage. After that, it did not take him long to create an actual life-form, this time through the natural way. Yet he wasn't happy with his wife and child. Next to that, the rumors that Shelly her novel had spread about him made it impossible for him to continue his research. The only reason that he wasn't arrested for his kind of research was the fact that his family was a very influential one in the region. Things didn't look well for him though and he got depressed.
It turned out that he was not able to live a normal life, so a year after his wife had given birth he committed suicide. He left everything he owned in the hands of his wife. It was also around this time that Shelly her novel became so widely known that people were now actively spreading rumors. These rumors where now often about her and her son as well, and they became known as 'the cursed family'. Not even the influential family behind Dr. Frankenstein was able to protect them from the hate and fear that people had towards them, which was being spread by these rumors. Some of the people living in the region even began to believe that her son was also a monster created from dead body-parts.
This is why Dr. Frankenstein his wife was quick to turn to action after his death. Only a few days after her husband had committed suicide, she sold everything he once owned and moved to a distant relative of her in Transylvania. She had hoped that the many stories about her husband and family that were going around would not yet be known there. Her last hope was that the vague rumors that would probably spread all the way to Transylvania would not stand out between the many stories that were already going around in this area. For many years to come, her family managed to live there in relative peace. However, this peace would slowly crumble to chaos and sadness in the latest generation of Frankensteins, starting with the two infamous 'Frankenstein Brothers'.
The Frankenstein Brothers
Augustin Frankenstein, Victor and Valerica their father, was a distant relative of Dr. Victor Frankenstein. Augustin only had one other sibling, a brother called Aurelius. Both were born in the same area of Transylvania that Dr. Frankenstein his wife had moved too many years ago, due to the fact that most of the Frankenstein family had remained in this area for all of their lives. However, it was Augustin that had inherited the large mansion owned by the branch of the family in this area.
Augustin, as the older brother, was the more sensible one in a lot of ways. His younger brother Aurelius, was quick to act and was a lot more willing to take risks. Though they were different, they formed a pair that didn’t stop at petty things. They both dreamed big and had goals of equally grand proportions in mind. They were best friends, even though they had many arguments and heated discussions about their goals and dreams throughout the years. These discussions often tended to bring up their interests in a certain pair of sisters as well, only to get completely out of hand at an impressive pace whenever these two became the point of discussion.
Yet one of the wedges that supported their friendship got kicked away from underneath it, when Augustin inherited the aforementioned family mansion and most of the family its wealth. This was not to the liking of Aurelius, as he had logically wanted an equal amount in the inheritance. Still, they settled on it and they both were able to make good use of the money they had inherited by making investments. Their relationship got strained, but it didn’t seem to do any serious damage. After all, they were now the last two Frankensteins alive in their branch of the family, for their parents had both passed away before their own children were born and they did not have any other family.
In the years they spent as young adults, Augustine was focused at making a steady flow of income. Aurelius on the other hand, was the one that earned money on risqué gambles. Yet most the investments Aurelius made were always overshadowed by his brother’s constant stream of success. There was a distinct difference in this behavior, one that greatly reflected their personalities and how they had lived their lives.
Together, they raised the prosperity of the Frankenstein name to new levels of wealth and reputation. They were washing away of the faint stains of the past through their hard work and effort. Both of them held a vast amount of potential for greatness. It was Aurelius who came up with the idea of moving, which was almost immediately rejected by Augustin. The older brother saw the risk as something that was simply too great to take. All they had known was the Transylvania area, since that was where they had spend all of their life. Moving away, to bigger cities, was simply too much of a risk on their financial and social security.
The truly desolate place that the brothers called their home almost never had any visitors. They had barely any contact with neighboring villages, other than that which was made for business and work. This was due to the infrastructure that was not maintained and therefore heavily neglected. Thus, only few new people ever visited the area, and those born in it often moved away to seek better futures elsewhere.
Among the many who did not move away, mainly due to Augustin, were the Frankenstein brothers. But they were not the only ones, for the Dalca sisters, their childhood acquaintances, as friends would be to much of a generous term for it, stayed in the area as well. Despite the lack of any relationship between them, the two brothers were captivated by the two Dalca girls, Camelia and Carolyn. Neither of them could decide on whom they liked more, but 'taking' one was mutually understood as a taboo. Even so, Aurelius as the quick-to-act one, would push the second wedge away from underneath their friendship, as he ended up 'taking' Carolyn.
If it was not for Augustin fancying Camelia so much, the relationship between the brothers would have ended right there. Yet Augustin simply waited some time before asking Camelia to marry him. She gladly accepted his proposal, mostly due to his promise to financially secure the Dalca family, something Aurelius had promised Carolyn as well. The difference was that Aurelius had already married Carolyn and fathered her child by the time Augustin and Camelia got married. One could also say that, like their ways of investing, the marriage between Aurelius and Carolyn had been one full of passion and romance, while the marriage between Augustin and Camelia could almost be deemed 'cold' or 'planned' to those who didn't know them.
Aurelius strongly disliked the Frankensteins legacy. He held the desire to stay away from their ancestor his indiscretion for as far as he possibly could. Augustin however, seemed to become more and more interested in it after his marriage. Augustin began spending more an more money on research into the topic. Where Aurelius had managed to become a lot more responsible as a parent, Augustin seemed to become more and more irresponsible. This made Aurelius decide to move away with Carolyn and their child as soon as he could. He did not wish for his dreams to be held back by his brothers egocentric point of view. All he wanted was safety and security for his wife and child. However, when Aurelius shut this door behind him, he also shut close a door that could have lead to the restoration of their friendship.
The third and last wedge, the final thing that could have restored their friendship, got knocked away shortly after the wedding of Augustin and Camelia. This was when Augustin started to show signs of getting completely obsessed by the research into their ancestor. In his study, he started learning all he could about the taboo research that the Frankenstein family had only wished to bury deep underneath the sands of time. Augustin exhumed the old knowledge that was being kept hidden for obvious reasons. The old documents, assumed to be destroyed, which the day of light would not shine well on, they were all brought up once more.
The public would clearly never accept the truth and the research value behind them. This sparked the biggest conflict between the two, where Aurelius and Augustin were almost literally at each-others throats. It were their wives that pulled them away from each-other, as the brothers were fueled by blind stubbornness. Their wives tried ending the fighting and somewhat succeeded in settling it as peacefully as they could. However, the brothers never spoke to each-other again after that day. Their friendship was completely ruined and utterly destroyed, never to be restored again.
Aurelius wasn't the only one that Augustin lost contact with. Augustin also started losing contact with the few friends he once had, spending more and more time alone in his study. Most of those friends went away without him ever caring about it. Not that anyone would know why. It was something that would just further the split between the two, as Augustin quickly became what Aurelius would forever refer to as 'the withered branch of their tree'. It was a quote he would even carry to his death bed.
The fact that the brothers didn’t speak with each-other after that argument, saddened both Camelia and Carolyn deeply. They had only wished for the family to be friends. Yet the hatred that had ignited between the two men, was not one they were able to put out. Aurelius died eight years later, not having spoken a single word to his brother during all that time. Only Camelia and her children attended his funeral. Augustin was too busy with researching what Aurelius had hated him for. He never seemed to care about the loss of his brother. Thus, the brothers parted ways, never to make amends. On the other side of this story of two brothers, is the story of the two Dalca Sisters.
The Dalca Sisters
Unlike the Frankensteins, the Dalca name isn't one of old legends. It is a relatively new name in history, as it came from somewhere else than the ancestors of the Dalca sisters, Camelia and Carolyn. These sisters were two of the modern descendants of the family. Unfortunately, the original names of the Dalca sisters their ancestors had been lost in the generations.
With that said, the bloodline itself is very old and powerful one, unlike the name. Although hidden behind the mundane modern Dalca surname, the family had always possessed strong connections with spirits. Many, if not all of the family members with the blood of their ancestors, had the natural ability to communicate and interact with spirits. While some of them were better than others, and while some only had the innate ability, the family tree that made up their ancestors was one that was littered with powerful shamans.
In the modern society, the Dalca family could not utilize the power of shamanism without being branded as heretics. Thus, despite their power, they had chosen to mostly let it lie dormant. If it hadn't been for this, they could have made quite the profit from spirit healing, working as spiritualists or working in any of other pseudo-scientific lines of work.
However, their family didn’t want to be stained with the social brand of heresy. Despite the modern day Transylvania, many of its inhabitants were still holding on to their old superstition regarding witches and the supernatural. With the poor infrastructure and the slow spread of information, the villages would not see it below them to have an old fashioned witch hunt.
Ironically, they were the first to be asked for help when anything superstitious occurred. Even without the use of their bloodline its power, the Dalca sisters had a pretty good reputation, one that had been inherited by their ancestors as exorcists and spiritual cleansers. For they once were great helpers of the community and the people, through the facade of religious work. Considered to be incredibly wise, they could have even made quite an impact on the village council if they needed as well.
The sisters, Camelia and Carolyn, grew up as farmers. Their family didn’t own much land, and what little they did own yielded only few crops. It was barely enough to sustain the family, let alone that it was anything worth selling. Thus, any other source of income was appreciated. This is why they never refused whenever they would get called on to drive spirits away. It was often voluntary work, but the family more often than not, got compensation in the form of some food or small donations of money. It wasn't much, but it was enough to keep them from getting hungry.
The big change for the Dalca family, came when they got in contact with the acquainted family of Frankenstein, whose wealth and reputation preceded them. The two only remaining sons of the now prestigious family, found a love for the two Dalca daughters. Although hidden behind a platonic business mask, the brothers eventually couldn’t hide it. For the sisters, the proposals from the two rich men had been irresistible. Not only would they find the two men as the loves of their lives, but they also found the financial security that the two of them would offer.
The older Carolyn Dalca got swept up by Aurelius, the younger brother. While her sister, Camelia, was proposed to by the older Frankenstein brother, Augustin. While the first had been more of a heated romance, the second had been more of an arranged marriage. This confirmed the idea that the brothers had a weird hobby of being opposites. They choose the equally different sisters, each in his own way proposing to one. While Carolyn was the more spiritually adept sister, and the one that was more interested in the bloodline power, her sister Camelia was less interested in it, and more in the human aspect of the bloodline power. Irony strikes often, as the one who became less superstitious more cautious, Aurelius, chose the sister with the most interest in the shamanic subject. While the older, who would become a superstitious and sporadic maniac, Augustin, choose the more down to earth sister, that had an opposite interest in the power.
The Frankenstein brothers did, however, split up due to aforementioned underlying disagreements about the legacy of their family. Yet this did not change the good relationship that the sisters had, as they made sure to keep in contact. For Augustin and Aurelius, this was irritating. Yet both knew that there was no place for them to argue, as the sisters couldn’t be separated. Now that the story of their parents has been told, it is time for Victor and Valerica their story to start.
Victor & Valerica – Early Years
A few years after their marriage, Camelia gave birth to the twins, a boy named Victor and a girl named Valerica. They were both home-schooled by their mother and had very little contact with the outside world. Their father spent most of his time locked away in his study, meaning that their mother took over all care for them. They did visit their aunt, uncle and older cousin every now and then, which were the only other people they knew besides from their parents. This was why they also were at the funeral of Aurelius, though they had never fully grasped what had been going on due to their young age.
However, when the kids were both ten years old, their own mother died due to a decease. A priest from the village, Carolyn, their cousin and their father were all the people that were present at her funeral. They had lost contact with the rest of the family long ago and none of them had any friends. They were all filled with grief, but Augustin had the most problems dealing with it. His inability to deal with the loss of his wife eventually made him mentally unstable. After a psychological breakdown, he eventually found some sort of comfort in doing more research into what his ancestor had done. His obsession for his ancestor grew exponentially after this.
This was one of the reasons that simply studying the research of his ancestor was no longer enough. Augustin wanted to start replicating it, enhancing it, repeating it... In the end, he wanted to do nothing less than to create his own 'monster'. His obsession became even worse when he got the idea to use the knowledge to bring his wife back to life. He was smart enough to keep these hidden motives silent though.
From that point on, he spent all his free time on his research and he dragged his two kids with him into this madness. He took over his wife her task of homeschooling them, but he focused solely on things that were relevant to his experiments. The main topics that were included in this were topics such as biology, physics and chemistry. Yet he also covered topics like religion studies, history and psychology. For as long as a topic could be relevant to the research in some way, he would try to teach it to his children.
Even though Carolyn protested against it, Augustin kept away Victor and Valerica from her and Angelica. He no longer allowed them to waste time playing with their cousin and having fun at their aunts house. Whereas both Carolyn and Augustin had lost a sibling and the love of their life, they were not able to comfort each-other in their loss and only got separated further. For the children this meant further separation and isolation.
Yet it quickly turned out that Victor had an incredible talent for figuring out things that were related to the more 'superstitious' parts of what they were doing. Valerica, on the other hand, had an incredible talent for the more scientifically parts of what they were doing. Their father didn't spare any expenses to give them what they needed to learn and stimulated them to use their full potential. It seemed like both of them were incredibly talented at what they were doing and they were very quick to learn new things.
In just a few years, Victor had found out that he had some latent potential as a shaman. Though he would never admit it to his father, he had been driven to work on it by the desire to follow up his mothers family their legacy as shamans. It had been his way to deal with the loss of his mother at a young age. This is why he had been training this ability to the maximum of his extents and had managed to become an expert on shamanism. This is why he was already performing dangerous rituals to search for contact with the spirits at a young age. Their father, being as obsessed as he was, saw no danger in what his son was doing. Augustin even bought most of the necessary materials for his son in order to stimulate him to learn more and to work harder.
By this time, Valerica had learned so much about human physiology that she could easily be able to become a surgeon or doctor. She had also learned a lot about biomechanics and was always up to date with science its latest discoveries.
Both Victor and Valerica often shared their information, but it was clear they each had their own talent. Yet neither of them stopped there, they both went as far to learn entirely different languages to be able to continue their learning and research, including Japanese and English. Their father was applauding this as much as he could. It seemed like the three of them would actually be able to not just repeat Dr. Frankenstein his experiment, but also to complete it. It looked like nobody would be able to stop them from doing so.
But five years later, when Victor and Valerica were both fifteen, their father died in a car accident on his way back home. They were both devastated and due to the fact that they were not able to contact their aunt Carolyn, it looked like they would be placed into an orphanage. Yet instead of this, they were able to convince everyone that they were able to live on their own. The rules in the region that they lived in were never kept very strictly, and they had managed to use this to be able to remain in the mansion together. It had just been a matter of giving the right persons the right amount of money. With Victor and Valerica remaining behind on their own, the story could have ended here. However, it did not, as they decided to continue this legacy on their own.
The Legacy Continues
Without ever talking about it, both Victor and Valerica had decided to continue their father his attempts at re-creating what their ancestor, Dr. Frankenstein had managed to do. They had gotten very close to finding 'the key' to most of the flaws in what Dr. Frankenstein had done with their father, so they wished to grant him his only wish. Furthermore, for Victor this became the ultimate act of shamanism, one that would honor his mother her family its legacy as well. Their plan was simple.
Valerica would recreate a body out of body-parts that their father had gathered at hospitals. She would make sure that it was as close to that of a human being as she could get it to be. The only exception to this would be the fact that the different parts of the body would remain 'replaceable' in case they would start to rot. However, it turned out that in order for this exception to work, she also needed to make a few other exceptions. This is where her knowledge about biomechanics came in very useful.
Victor would try to solve the other of the original problems; the lack of intellect and personality. He would try to do so by using the powers he had gained as a shaman to look for a spirit that they would be able to put into the body. To do this, he would let his conscious enter the spirit realm in order to look for the spirit of a deceased human that was likely to 'fit' the body. He had already traveled to the spirit realm successfully before, so he was confident in his ability to do so.
However, it turned out that Victor his task was impossible. He could not find a spirit that would fit the type of body that they had prepared. Yet he did find the spirit of a fifteen year old girl that was trapped in a dark part of the spirit realm. This is why they decided to change the body they had prepared to suit that of a fifteen year old girl, instead of hoping to find a spirit that would fit the original body. Luckily for them, they managed to find the required body-parts through some shady connections that their father had used when he was still alive, instead of having to go dig up corpses on a graveyard like their ancestor had done. It showed how the right amount of money can buy you everything you can think off. The days of working and learning that Victor and Valerica grew used to were all extremely similar, except for a few days. These were the days on which they were visited by unexpected guests.
The Doggy Sisters
“It showed how the right amount of money can buy you everything you can think off.” That was the mindset they had when they were first introduced to the Doggy Sisters, but they had managed to prove them to be rather wrong.
It was a day like normal. Victor had sent some mails to the business people that had asked him to invest in their projects with his families wealth and then reluctantly visited the town to buy some necessary supplies, mainly food. Valerica had been researching ways to reactivate hormone systems through electromechanical stimulation of the hypothalamus and had afterwards decided to try cook up some ardei umpluţi with the food Victor had brought back with him.
However, this normal day was interrupted when someone suddenly threw a fireball through their kitchen window... If they hadn't seen it coming from afar, they would've surely been burned down to ashes on the spot. Yet, to everyone's surprise, this barbaric attack turned into some sort of scholarly agreement. It turned out that the the girl that had attacked them was a Mamono called Diana. She had been sent after them in order to obtain information, but she was more than willing to stop her attack on them if they themselves gave her information. Next to that, she would even allow them to obtain information of their own by studying her. It was the prime example of a scholarly win-win situation. The only downside was that they had never managed to find out who had been in charge of the French organization that had sent Diana after them.
After this strange initial meeting, Diana had spent some time with them, so that they could mutually exchange information and learn from each-other. Though they also got to know Rachel during this time, Lily never actually wished to show herself to them. They only learned about her through her sisters. Though the Doggy Sisters probably didn't know this, they had played a huge role in dragging the twins out of their complete and utter isolation. Both Valerica and Victor often hid their excitement of the fact they were staying over at their place behind a strong mask of their business-like attitude, but it was quite likely that she would've 'smelled it' at more than one point.
One of the best examples of this, would be the time that Victor had offered Diana some of his shamanic potion which had gotten her high as a kite. During her high, she had been doing things ranging from talking to trees to trying to set their house on fire, including their already partly burned down kitchen. Of course this was all pretty troublesome, but it was the kind of trouble that gave them a sort of joy that they had experienced only sparsely during their lives.
Another example was how embarrassed Valerica secretly was when she realized that she had done a body check-up on Diana that could have been considered a little too thorough... This was something that she would never tell the Doggy Sisters, for she did truly believe that science was important enough to have done it. Yet it had showed Victor a side of his sister that he had previously never been aware off.
Though Valerica was just as excited as Victor, it was Victor that got the most information from studying the Doggy Sisters. The way that they formed different spirits and forms while still being shaped and bound as one entity, showed him many of the otherwise unknown connections between body and spirit. However, this did not mean he fully understood her spirit state, for the more he tried to study her, the more questions it raised. It was as if every answer brought ten times more questions with it. In the end, he had been forced to give up due to the fact that they were wishing to return to their home, but the information he had gained would become crucial in the way he would later be binding Antanasia her spirit to her body. With all the information Victor and Valerica had gathered, it was time to finally put it to use.
The Experiment - Part 1
It was a year later that they had everything prepared, getting the required body-parts had taken the longest. But in the end Valerica had managed to recreate the body of a fifteen year old female and they had all necessary equipment to 'start it up'. Luckily for them, their father had also bought much better equipment than their ancestor had used. They had machines that were able to check all the signs of life their subject showed and they wouldn't need a lightning bolt to bring her to life.
Victor had also managed to prepare all the rituals that he could think of, using those that would aid him to guide the spirit to the body but also those that would grant them protection against evil spirits. It had turned the room into a strange mixture of state of the art medical equipment and things you could expect in a horror movie.
The last thing they had decided on, was a name for their creation. Neither of them wanted to refer to her as a 'monster' or 'creature' or an 'it'. It was likely that both of them secretly held the desire to bring something of her parents back by bring to life what they had created and by fulfilling their father dream with it. Their creation would be called Antanasia, which meant 'one who will be reborn or immortal' in their native language.
It seemed like time slowed when they started up their 'experiment'. Valerica was constantly monitoring all the equipment that measured the bodily functions. Most of these bodily functions were slowly starting up and required great care. This is why Valerica was busy pushing buttons left and right. She only stopped doing these things when she had to inject certain medicines or chemicals into the body of Antanasia.
Victor had been taking some 'shamanic herbs' and had set up more rituals than ever before. He smoothly went into a state from which he was capable of reaching out to the part of the spirit realm where the spirit he had found was trapped. The first time he tried to connect with her in order to lead her back to the body they had prepared he saw it. He saw what she kept going through, time after time after time.
The Trapped Spirit of Antanasia
She woke up. She woke up the exact same way as she always did.
She knew it from the start, that today would be the day.
It took her a some time to get out of bed, for she did not wish to leave its comfort and warmth.
Yet in the end, she had no choice, but to leave it and to enter the harsh and cold world outside of it.
She went downstairs, hoping to find some of it, but there wasn't any.
It looked like she would have to wait and hope that she would be given some food later.
The work she had to do was hard, especially when she had to do it on an empty stomach.
Yet she did it, like she always did. Without complaining and slow, but steadily.
She plowed the infertile land until she realized that there would not be any lunch for her either.
So she kept plowing until the sun left the sky and the world turned dark.
Then she just sat down, staring upwards until the moon had replaced the sun his presence.
At that moment she stood up and started walking.
There were 9.732 stones in the part of the road she always walked on.
There were 348 trees visible from the road, this included the 5 fallen trees.
There sound of a cricket could be heard 125 separate times in the background.
It took her a total of exactly 14.567 seconds to reach her end destination.
She felt like she had already counted everything she could ever count.
It was always the same. The numbers never changed. Nothing ever did.
When she reached the mill, she didn't hesitate as she climbed up.
The rope was already laying there, in the same way that it always was.
She had made it into a tie countless of times, but she always made the same mistakes.
But in the end she also always managed to bind it strongly to the outside of the mill.
She felt nothing when she made sure the rope was wrapped around her neck.
She still felt nothing when she looked down as she forced her body to jump.
Like always, she felt a slight bit of pain when the rope stopped her fall, but ended her life.
It was the same as it had always been. Everything turned black, as if she went to sleep.
She woke up. She woke up the exact same way as she always did.
She knew it from the start, that today would be the day...
Victor Frankenstein - The Experiment Part 2
Victor had been shocked by what he had seen. For a moment, it almost brought him completely out of his concentration. The things that the trapped spirit of this girl had been having go through, countless of times, were terrible. After this, he was more than ever focused on saving her spirit by letting it find the body they had prepared. It was not just his fathers wish that drove him now, it was also the urge to help this trapped spirit.
Using all his powers as a shaman, Victor managed to pull her spirit out of this dark part of the spirit realm. It took him a lot of effort, but both of them managed to return to their own world. He immediately tried to bind her spirit to the body that they had prepared. Meanwhile, his sister was 'starting up' all of the bodily functions that they had to delay. They could only start up some of t hem at this very last moment if they wanted to body to 'live'.
It looked like everything was going well. But it wasn't. Victor his actions had lured in countless of evil spirits and the defenses he had set up against them were far too weak to resist their rage. Within mere seconds, the situation escalated into pure chaos. Neither Valerica nor Victor had any idea what was going on from that point on, but it was the last time they saw each-other.
Victor felt the rage of thousands of evil spirits coursing through him, so intensely that it became physically visible all over his skin in all sorts of forms, including burns, cuts and bruises. Due to the fact that these wounds were inflicted by very strong spirits, they would never heal. Even if medical experts or mages were to try to cure them, they would reform shortly afterwards, causing Victor quite some pain while doing so. The only way to prevent these wounds from hurting him, was by wearing clothing that covered almost all of his body, since the wounds seemed to stop hurting if they were not exposed to light, in particular sunlight, for a certain amount of time.
Victor passed out shortly afterward all this happened. The first thing he realized when he woke up, was that he had been very lucky that he hadn't been completely taken over by the evil spirits. The second thing he noticed was that he was being held by Antanasia. Their experiment had been a success. The third thing he noticed was that his sister was nowhere to be found.
After going through everything, over and over again, Victor could only conclude that the following had happened: He had successfully brought the spirit of the girl into the body that they had prepared for her. However, he had payed a price for it, since his body was now covered in incurable scars and he would have to walk around almost fully clothed for the rest of his life.
His sister had been able to revive the body, but she had vanished. Victor had retraced every option he could think of, but she was nowhere to be found and there was not a single clue left as to what could have happened. This was what he considered the heaviest price he had to pay for his deeds. The experiment had taken a heavy price, but it had also given a new life to someone.
Antanasia Frankenstein
Antanasia herself turned out to have been taken over by multiple spirits, but the spirit that Victor had brought into the body had been far stronger than the rest of them. Luckily for her, this meant that she would not suffer from personality disorders, ever though she housed a great multitude of different spirits.
The main change that this possession by multiple spirits had brought, was the fact that she could use her body-parts separately from her main body. This was due to a combination of the fact that her body-parts had been replaceable and due to the fact that the spirits in them kept them connected with the main body through some sort of spiritual connections. It turned out that she was capable of doing some supernatural things with her body-parts, things that weren't even intended to be doable.
Antanasia turned out to have a very kind personality, and she saw Victor and Valerica as a weird mixture of gods, parents and siblings. In the end, she was incredibly grateful to them for getting her out of the nightmarish part of the spirit realm that she had been trapped in. The brain she had been given had been cleansed from all the previous owner her personal memories, but the impersonal knowledge had been kept. This was combined with the memories from the part of the spirit realm that she had been trapped was in. The combination of these memories was the reason that it didn't take Anastasia long to partly adjust to the world she now lived in.
It also turned out that she was very fond of reading, especially romance. She did turn it into her own special kind of romance though... One of her favorite things in romance was the moment a character would tell another character things like 'my heart will only beat for you'. It was something she took quite literally. One day, she even asked Victor if people transplanted each-others hearts after falling in love, since she thought it meant that they would always be connected and would always be 'close to each-others heart'. To her, this unique version of romance became some sort of ideal, even though she never clearly showed much interested in starting a relationship herself.
The fact that she was not a normal human and that she grew up in the Frankenstein mansion, which looked like it could come straight out of a horror movie, made her a lot more familiar with what others would consider to be fear inflicting, scary or creepy. She made a hobby out of swinging the heavy weapons around that formerly only served as the mansion its decorations. After a while she became actually good at using them, in particular a fancy looking axe that she had found in the mansion its basement.
After she was revived in the body that Valerica and Victor had made for her, she spent almost all of her time with Victor and has sworn to accompany him wherever he goes. She often got quite easily distracted or bored, until Victor decided to buy her something she could listen music with. After that, she was almost always seen wearing earplugs while traveling.
Victor Frankenstein
After loosing his sister in the accident, he came to believe that it was entirely his own fault. Like his sister, had never been eager to talk much, but instead of her, he had always been a lot more polite when he did talk. This helped him a lot during the time he spent traveling and had earned him some good connections with the outside world, especially the occult part of it.
Victor had always preferred to stay out of trouble and was never eager to participate in fights. He is possibly even more careful not to start something after the accident. Yet he will stop at nothing in order to find out what happened to his sister and to try to make up for whatever he did that made her vanish. He will also do a lot to help those whom he considers to be his allies.
He may not often show it, but he is truly glad that Antanasia follows him on the quest to find out what happened to his sister. Without her, he would've been far worse off than he was now. The fact that a lot of the other people either laugh at him or avoid him for the fact that he is always fully or weirdly clothed is one of those reasons.
Besides the wish to find his sister, he has an additional wish. After creating Antanasia, he had fulfilled his fathers dream and lived up to this side of his families legacy. However, his mother and aunt had both been great shamans, following a strong and ancient line and having their own legacy as well. Living up to that is one of the more hidden desires he has, though it will always come secondary to finding his sister.
Traveling
A few months after the accident, Victor and Antanasia choose to go on a long journey. They would be able to spent the rest of their lives in great luxury with the money that Victor had inherited and invested. However, Victor choose to spent their money on nothing but the most necessary things. This was especially the case when it came down to his own needs, yet he often got convinced by Antanasia to buy some 'less necessary' things. The only things he did not wish to save any expenses on was whatever could help him to find out what had happened to his sister.
One of the things that he had been actively trying to find during his travels, were clues that could lead him to the Doggy Sisters. He had told Antanasia tales about them over and over again, to the point that Antanasia could tell them as if she had been there herself. Though he always kept saying that the reason that he was looking for them was nothing, but the fact that they might be able to sniff out Valerica, it wasn't very unlikely that he had other motives as well. Antanasia, with her unique perception on romance, managed to draw her own conclusions...
They spent their time traveling together for quite a while, until Victor had turned seventeen. At that point, he heard of a place that could hold new information for him. This place would become his next destination and it seemed like he would stay there for longer than normally. Antanasia, like always, followed him without a second guess. To say that Victor and Antanasia their first few days after arriving at Shiroku have been hectic would be an understatement. They had been utter chaotic for them, at the very least...
The First Days At Shiroku
Shortly after entering the school, Victor met with Lillianna. She caught him while he was trying to bind a spirit to himself. Their conversation managed to head into a rather inconvenient direction, in which he was acting a little too reserved This eventually chased her off. He hasn't seen her since. To make matters worse, it turned out that the spirit that he had bound to him was actually a spirit called Excalibur. This spirit was well known for being a 'curse' among shamans, due to its highly obnoxious behavior and the absolute impossibility to get rid of him.
Later on, Victor had managed to get himself involved in making plans for a fight against some sort of virus that was called 'Omega' in a machine that was called the VTR. At the end of the day, he never entered that battle himself. However, he did get to know some people better during the time that he was preparing for it. He also got to know some others and their powers by watching them fight the virus in the VTR before him. This was also where and when he got the idea to join the VTR training club that Alexander Takeda was hoping to start up. He was secretly hoping to be able train his shamanism, and also wished to train his teamwork.
Meanwhile, Antanasia had somehow gotten caught up in an underground fighting tournament with some sort of strange 'chess' theme to it. It was organized through some sort of magical bracelets that would teleport people to an arena where they would have to fight each-other. Some sort of colored chess-kings were said to be the ones behind it. Avius had also gotten caught up in the tournament, but his behavior and reasoning seemed to be flawed enough for him to actually try to participate in it. Sylvia had helped them to figure out a lot of the things behind this tournament. Together with the obvious clues they gained from seeing his ability, they eventually started to suspect Johnathan Offrish to know more about it. Sadly enough, they have not been able to question him about it, as of yet.
Antanasia had also started a quest to hunt down the 'wolves in sheep's clothes' that were once mentioned by Fosse Grimm, during class. Her partner in this quest was Natsumi Fujisaki. After asking about it at the Volunteer Club, they were told that it would be for the best for them to ask Yuuki Xecrent more about them. Yuuki Xecrent had also given them the original explanation that had made them believe that the wolves in sheep's clothes were literally wolves in sheep's clothes clothes. When visiting her, Yuuki Xecrent explained to them that wolves in sheep's clothes 'could' be real, so they decided to go on a quest to find them.
During these first few days, Victor had also been stunned by seeing Diana again. She was someone that he had spent a few very valuable days of his youth with. This had been when he was still living with his sister Valerica at their mansion and when Antanasia didn't even 'exist' yet. However, he had not been given any real time to talk to her, nor had he been able to ask her if she could find his sister by using her strong sense of smell. The event with Leo and her disappearance straight after it had prevented this. Last of all... He hadn't gotten a chance to sort out his feelings for her either. Even though he had been looking for her after the battle with Leo, he couldn't find her. This meant that he eventually left the school for a while, without having gotten any answers to either his questions or his feelings.
Yet the event with the most impact of all, was the battle with a powerful elemental mage that seemed to have gone insane. Most of the students called him an emo, even though he was referring to himself as a god. He was also known as 'Leo'. The fight had counted multiple stages and lasted very long, but luckily enough, nobody died during it. Eventually, some weird entity managed to defeat Leo with some sort of shadow attack from below. It had also exclaimed a few words to all. Especially his words: "It has been fun, I don't think I'll find a more useless host than you for quite some time... If you survive this trial, you might become worthy of my powers after all." raised more than a few questions. It was also speculated that Leo his defeat was only possible due to the help of the former principal Richard. However, this was never proven. Even though Leo had been defeated, it had been a very open ended scenario.
After this event, they were told that the school would be closed for a while in order to be rebuild, since most of the school had been destroyed in the process of the battle. One of the few good sides of this terrible attack, was that it had managed to create a bond between Victor, Antanasia and some of the others students. Sylvia in particular, had managed to leave quite an impression on Victor... Other people that stood out to them in a positive way were Callaway, Misaka, Lucifer, Sing, Kasumi, Iwao, Sho, Brissa, Areathy and Nero.
However, it had also made them suspicious towards some students that had turned their backs on the others in one way or another. Shini had even managed to straight up make an enemy out of most of the school body by trying to side with Leo. Yuuki Xecrent and Mamoru Sekai had also fallen under suspicion, either due to their behavior or due to their complete absence during most of the battle.
Victor really needed some time to cool down and think things through after all of this. He spent a few hours to make sure that everyone was okay (in the not-on-the-edge-of-dying sense) while he was simultaneously looking for Diana. After that, he decided to take up on a lead that one of his contacts had given him. It would allow him to take a few days 'off' without wasting any time.
The lead that he had been given was about two rather peculiar catgirls originating from a clan living on the Philippines. The catgirls and their clan were widely known for their soulbinding rituals, among both the community of shamans and the community of spiritualists in general. Both of the catgirls had shown up a few times in Japan lately. As such, Victor had gathered information about their latest whereabouts and decided to travel there. When she heard this, Antanasia immediately wanted to travel along. She was really looking forward to meeting some real catgirls and was secretly hoping that the catgirls would know more about wolves in sheep's clothes as well. In any case, she immediately went along with him. And so, after their problematic first days in Shiroku, Victor and Antanasia set out to look for the catgirls.
