Code Geass

Code Geass was one of the most engaging anime series I have watched to date. It takes a fairly common and arguably overused plot structure, and adds its own unique flavor to it. The show is extremely ambitious, which is both its greatest asset and its biggest pitfall. The main character, Lelouch, comes into possession of a power that allows him to command anyone that he makes eye contact with to perform any task. Much of the plot is well written and a good portion of the first season maintains a air of being clever but not over the top. However, as different and more absurd elements stack up, the show becomes less believable, and more about shock value, and grandiosity. At this point though I was already sucked into the world of Code Geass, and although it became harder and harder to overlook these glaring issues, the show was just too entertaining to dislike. With a few tweaks this show could have been a masterpiece, but as it is I still find it to be an acceptable anime. Character development was reserved for only the main cast, and some of the reasoning behind certain decisions were questionable at best. Art design and sound quality were definite boosts to the shows credit. I cannot recommend this to viewers looking for airtight plots and well structured stories. In fact, these people would probably denounce this show as garbage. If however, you are looking for a show that is fast paced and creates a tense atmosphere for almost every scene, this is certainly worth a look. 6/10
