The Fine Line Between Shoujo and Seinen - Mature Men are Grown-up Little Girls

I’ve been hearing about the upcoming Orange anime from time to time. It looks like it will be a rather great anime. Because of the anime, I looked up the original Orange manga and saw that it is rather highly rated on MAL. Late last night I noticed that the entire series was out and available to Crunchyroll subscribers. I started reading it and couldn’t put it down. I stayed up until nearly 5am to read the entire manga and just loved it. Another “Masterpiece” for me; a new series that I’m going to have to find room for on my Top 100 List. Extremely touching and hits very close to home. But I’m not writing today just to gush about how great the Orange manga was; if I was going to do that, I’d consider finally writing my first review. What I’m writing about today is the genres that Orange falls under. While I was reading the series, I was wondering what Japanese gender/age genre it fell under: shounen, shoujo, seinen, or josei. It kind of felt like shoujo, but it also dealt with very mature subject matter and had a very different storytelling structure than most shoujo manga that I’ve read. MAL simply categorized it as shoujo, but when I looked up more information on the series, both Wikipedia and Baka Updates Manga described it as both shoujo and seinen. Most people know what shoujo anime and manga is (material targeted towards young girls), but if you’re not familiar with seinen, this is a gender/age genre that designates the series as primarily targeted towards adult males. The most common/well known type of seinen tends to be hard and gritty fantasy and sci-fi stories such as Berserk, Akira, Blame, and Hellsing. But one of the things that Orange has brought to light for me is that it seems with many stories, especially those that have romance as a central theme, the difference between if they are either shoujo or seinen is very slim. For example, with a quick genre search MAL, Chobits, Rozen Maiden, Girl Friends, and A Bride’s Story are all classified as seinen. Now, at least in my own experience, explicitly classifying entertainment based on gender and age demographics seems like a somewhat exclusively-Japanese thing. Yes, the US and people in other Western nations have terms like chick flick, guy movie, and boy’s/girl’s shows, but you typically won’t see those as labels on store shelves or on the back of DVDs to describe what genre it is. We’d probably have people complaining that such things are sexist here, but in Japan it’s pretty normal. Now, as the above genre search results show, it can be a little rough at times to know what a series is technically meant to be. However, there is a somewhat easy and usually definite way to final out what category a series falls into: Marketing. It’s all about who the intended target market for the series. Sometimes using this rule is very simple: is/was the manga serialized in a shounen, shoujo, seinen, or josei magazine? That will probably give you your answer 9 times out of 10 and if you dig a little bit deeper you should be able to find more-or-less who the other 10% of series were going after. But back on topic, why do some series startle the shoujo/seinen line? You’d expect some series to blur the line between shoujo and josei (adult females) such as with Nana, or between shounen (young boy) and seinen like with Blood Lad. But why the similarities between shoujo and seinen? As I said, it seems that romantic themes tend to be a common factor for many shoujo/seinen mixed series and I think that’s a pretty key part of this. It is said that girls mature faster than boys and I would say that many men never reach a particularly high level of social/emotional maturity. For some men, this means that they still enjoy a good fart joke well into their 40s. For others, and I think this is particularly more common with introverted geeks, they tend to (on some level) still have the emotional maturity of a 14 year old girl. That might sound weirder or creepier than I intend for it to, but I can put myself up as a case for this type personally. I’m a 32 year old man and I tend to find shoujo series to be the most relatable to me. It also reminds me of when I used to regularly read Megatokyo. The main character Piro was a very introverted geek and he would actually go read through shoujo manga when he needed help with relationships. There was even a T-shirt based on this which I actually still have (although it was in light blue instead of black when I bought it). Even dating sims and their corresponding anime adaptations like Air, Kanon, and Clannad deal with very emotional shoujo-like themes even though the original material was explicitly marketed towards men (evident by the sexual nature of most of these games). So yes, as the title of this post says, many men (especially those in geek culture) are just little girls all grown up. But again, as someone who’s first real anime that he got into was Sailor Moon and went on to like things such as Cardcaptor Sakura, Powerpuff Girls, and Fruits Basket, this isn’t really news to me. This established knowledge is also why I wasn’t at all surprised by the adult male fan base that developed for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (and yes, I am a Brony). But I was still very interested by the fact that at least two sources actually labeled Orange as both a shoujo and seinen series. The gender/age descriptors are usually pretty rigid in Japan and MAL seems to take that to heart as I couldn’t find any example of a series that used more than one of the four descriptors. But I don’t really like these descriptors all that much anyway. I mean, they can be helpful at times by using typical stereotypes of what these labels usually mean to determine if you might be interested in a series or not, but they can also automatically turn people off from something before they even give it a chance. I think everyone just needs to be smart about things and not let a target demographic determine your enjoyment of a piece of entertainment. There is always the possibility to find something great in the most unlikely of places.

Still having trouble finding time

I'm still having trouble finding time to watch anime, especially such a long series like Air Gear but I'm doing the best I can. I have also been having trouble following Sakamoto, it is funny but a bit boring. It may be better rn but I will have to devote this long weekend to catching up. Tanaka-kun is surprisingly funny however. Based on the title I thought it and Sakamoto would be switched in terms of quality but Tanaka interests me more.

Spring 2016 - Week 8 wrap-up

Kiznaiver - Episode 8 It was a step down rom the previous episode, the whole Kiznaiver plotline makes everything feel artificial and staged, which is an aspect that will hopefully be adressed later on. The fact that the show itself just drew its own shipping chart of the protagonists was hilarious, but it also contributes to the feeling I mentioned before, and that "Nico likes Tenga" thing wasn't really... a thing. The last scene (and the whole episode) was beautifully shot, doing most of the work that the script failed at, since the whole flashback thing doesn't really have an emotional impact by itself, Katsuhira and Sonozaki are just so detached and inhuman... and there just isn't enough texture for me to care about their relationship. It had its funny moments, like that Maki x Yuta scene, and Nico is still adorable no matter what. Concrete Revolutio - Episode 21 Yutaka Nakamura was in it, which is automatically a good thing, but... I didn't understand shit. To be more exact, I get the gist of it, but I don't care, too many side characters whose roles I barely remember got introduced, and their scenes went by too quickly, so I ended up feeling disconnected from the events, except for Jiro's flashback, which was interesting to say the least. I also was baffled by the fact that Jiro didn't want to explicitly antagonize the Bureau/government, maybe I didn't pay too much attention to the previous eps. Jojo Diamond is Unbreakable - Episode 9 It was tense from start to finish, Yukako's voice is terrifying, and the mood swing when she loses her shit is epic. I was a bit confused by Reverb act 2, but it turned out that I just misunderstood 1 line of dialogue. There's not much else to say other than "Koichi looked cool", but I had a lot of fun watching it. I'm warming up to the series, thankfully. Mayoiga - Episode 9 Nooooo, we're so close to the ending! This episode's second half had a lot of laugh-out-loud moments, including the hilariously abrupt start and end to Hayato's flashback, people giving up on pronouncing Hyouketsu no Judgeness correctly, and that spectacular last scene where MaiMai was almost hit by an arrow and screamed "what was that!?", but Love-handles-chan just went "don't try to change the subject". She has been the highlight of several episodes so far, her first conversation with Lion in ep6 (?) was brilliant.

HOW DO I RATE Well I try to balance out the quality of the anime and how much did I enjoy the series. Next to the enjoyment the next two important factors to me are the character development and a good plot. I do try to find the good parts in a series and if I find a series which I didn't liked or was horrible by my opinion I rather drop it than rate it 1 cause probably somebody else liked it, on the other hand I am very strict about anime.

My Opinion/Rant ~ Dub or Subs?

$

Hi! Welcome to my blog entry on a big debate in anime - Dub or Sub? Yes, you did read the title correctly, there will be ranting, British slang words and lot's of sarcasm. Enjoy, grab some popcorn. --- To begin with, I'm going to be perfectly honest about this and I won't "beat around the bush" as they say. I'm a Dub watcher and it's just the way I like to watch my anime. I'm not interested in Subs unless there just isn't a Dub for the anime I wanted to watch. If you cannot respect my opinion in the slightest then..... -* you know where to go*. --- Personal rant over. Now, I know there are a lot of you reading this thinking "This question had been asked millions of times before anyway. Why am I even reading this?".... But before you go, allow me to explain in my own opinion. People have been asking many questions over the preference over Dubbed anime or Subbed anime and I think it boils down to one of three things when talking about English Dubs; 1] One's Personal Preference ~ Now, this is hard to debate as everyone's got their own opinion on things and also I don't know what you are thinking. You could say that you prefer a certain voice actor so you would naturally want to watch an anime starring that voice actor. On the other hand, you could say that you are used to watching your anime in specific language. This matter is hard to answer... So hard, I'm just gonna leave it right there. 2] Elitist Opinion on the Japanese Language ~ This is the type of backwards opinions I don't like - when someone thinks that because anime happens to be made in Japan means that it's in Japanese and that it's the best language on God's Earth and that all other languages in anime are inferior... -_- What in the bloody hell are these people thinking of? The majority of people who make these comments actually don't speak Japanese first - they know sod-all about Japanese and will happily insult the English language Which.They.Can.Already.Speak. just because they happen to have read the English subtitles before so they can "understand" Japanese... 3] Negative Opinion on English Dubs ~ "Ah man! They sound like they are from a cartoon, lol!" "It's not in the original language so I won't ever watch an anime Dubbed." "Noooooooooooooooooooooo....." If any these seem familiar to you then you probably know already what I mean here. I hate it when some muppet says the first one as they have no clue as to what they have just said.*Personal opinion - Anime are not cartoons. If they were then why haven't you added Scooby Doo to your list right now?* The second one I can respect and I haven't got a foggy's about the third one... --- Let's face it there are some really bad Subs to rant about too.
FAQs ~ *Yes, these are real questions.. -_-* 1] What if the anime is set outside of Japan? Dub...? A~ Well, the chances of an anime being set somewhere far out like Antarctica, is very slim, very slim indeed. But that doesn't stop the spoken language being uh....... English? Spanish? French? Norwegian? Before I start an international debate here, what I'm trying to say is that a lot of people would think about watching a Dubbed anime if it was set outside of Japan.. Well, it might add more realism if there were to speak their native language in some other country. 2] Ah! But what if I want to watch my anime, not read it? I hate subs... A~ Uh, the subtitles only distract you if you let them. If you want, you can watch anime raw and see how much you can understand... 3] Yes, but what if I'm used to Japanese voices? A~ Good question! That has to be the best question yet. If you were to watch all anime shows in Japanese then you naturally want to watch your anime in Japanese for an obvious reason. - You're used to it. Same if you were to watch it in English, if you're used to it and then change language halfway through the anime, it's going to feel weird.
--- Another thing is "When should I watch a Dub then?" - In my opinion, you can watch one whenever you felt like it, or not. There is no sacred time to watch a Dub, be it by yourself or in a group. If you are in a group then make sure you're not with a bunch of hypocrites who change their minds and they start to ask you to watch subs and argue with you about it... Just watch one! If you have any questions, watch this guy's video. He can explain it better than I can.

I love this anime, it always leaves a cliffhanger though, but it's too good to stop watching it. Watch it because it is sooo good and interesting. I love this anime, I also think this is one of the best 2016 animes out there!!

Started JoJo

On a whim yesterday I started JoJo because I found a compilation of the first four openings. i'm really glad I did. It's just as good as everyone I know says it is. My only problem so far is the pacing is a bit jarring for me. It's only episode six but I feel like I know everyone's life story . That is not a bad thing but I have never watched a show that goes this quick. The only problem it caused for me is a time skip towards the beginning that made Dio a good guy for some reason. Early on he was a the worst but for seven years he was the best? Besides that the story, animation, and especially the music is great. Jojo's music is so good it makes me listen to it. I tend to just ignore background music but with this I have to listen.

30 Questions - Ano Natsu de Matteru
Note: Some answers might contain spoilers. 1. Favourite Theme Song Hm, I don't really have a favourite from Ano Natsu de Matteru. I didn't really like either the opening or ending this time but if I have to pick one I guess I like the opening a tiny bit more than the ending. 2. Least Favourite Theme Song Since the series only had 1 opening theme and 1 ending theme then the ending theme has to be the answer for this. I like the ending video but the theme itself didn't really catch my interest. 3. Favourite Background Music This time around I didn't really pay much attention to the background music and there wasn't any that jumped out at me and made me notice it so I don't have one this time. 4. Favourite Male Character Hm, I guess probably Kaito. 5. Least Favourite Male Character I didn't really dislike any characters in the series but I guess Tetsurou since there wasn't really that many male characters in the series anyway. 6. Favourite Female Character Ichika! She's adorable! I enjoyed her character and her food combinations that she made. 7. Least Favourite Female Character Chiharu, she's the only character that really annoyed me in the series. 8. Favourite Creature/Animal In The Series (If there are any.) Rinon of course! Rinon is super cute and funny. 9. Favourite Minor Character Kaori Kinoshita. I found her interesting and I wish she could of been in the series more. 10. Any Pairings You Like? I like Kaito/Ichika and Tetsurou/Mio. 11. Favourite Episode I enjoyed episode 4 the most. 12. Least Favourite Episode Hm, this is hard to pick. I think maybe episode 11 or 12. 13. A Quote From The Series "When someone dies, I'm sure that person journeys into people's hearts." - Kaito Kirishima (Episode 12) 14. Favourite Scene When Rinon was being eaten by a fish in episode 6. 15. A Scene That Made You Cry Nothing in Ano Natsu de Matteru made me cry but I was sad when they took Ichika away. 16. A Scene That Made You Laugh There was nothing that made me laugh but there were a couple scenes here and there that were amusing. 17. What Did You Like About The Series? I liked that they were trying to make a film. Although it didn't seem like the movie made much sense but they looked like they were having fun filming it. 18. Anything You Disliked About The Series? I felt like the last two episodes were a bit rushed. 19. Did You Like The Ending? Yes and no. I wish we could of actually seen Ichika come back to earth, not just that clip in the movie. 20. Which Character's Voice Did You Like The Most? No one's voice really stood out to me for me to pay enough attention to it so I'm not sure for this one. 21. Which Character's Voice Didn't You Like? Same answer as previous question. 22. Do You Like The Dub? (If it has one, if not - Do You Want It To Have A Dub?) At this time there is no dub for Ano Natsu de Matteru. I don't really mind if it gets one or not. I enjoyed it as it is. 23. Would You Re-Watch It? Possibly. It wouldn't be super high on my re-watch list but if I'm ever in the mood for a slice of life series I might consider re-watching this. 24. Did You Think The Series Was Too Long Or Too Short? No, it is fine with the 12 episodes that it has. 25. Did You Ever Want To Drop This Series? No. Even though I'm not a huge fan of Slice of Life series I was never really bored by the series so I never felt like I wanted to drop it. 26. Do You Want To Read The Manga? (If not already reading/have read it.) Not really. 27. Who's Clothes Did You Like Best? The clothes Kaori wore. They were cute. 28. Would You Buy Any Merch From The Series? I don't like the series enough to actively look for merch but if I came across any cute Ichika or Rinon merch at a convention or something I might consider it. 29. Would You Want To Live In Their World? Their world really isn't that different to ours except that they got to meet aliens so no, not really. 30. One Character From The Series That You Would Like To Meet In Real Life Ichika! I'd really like to meet Ichika and see what she would cook for me. Final Comments/Thoughts: The series wasn't super interesting but it wasn't boring either. One thing that still bothers me though is why did Remon have a different school uniform to the others? Even Ichika's wasn't the same even though they were meant to be in the same year, right?
