Over A Year

It's been over a year since my last post on MyAnimeList. I used to be super active, but now I'm not. I'm not in charge of the anime club anymore, and I really have no one to talk to about anime. That doesn't mean I don't watch it. I'm just not as into it as I once was. I feel really bad... I tried so hard to make so many things successful and they all just flopped.... Ghost stories make me feel better because "At least I'm not that guy"

So... I am sorry. Right after I said I would write more I did the exact opposite. That was the longest gap between blog entries I had. I watched a bit of anime in that time but not much. I finished Baka and Test season 1 which was hilarious. It was good but Hideyoshi confused me. I had no idea how to feel about him, and when I asked some of my friends they were just as confused. Besides Baka And Test I finished all of the Akito movies. I don't really know why I decided but I did. They were generally quite good but had some weird parts. For one, there were some scenes at the end where the geass was able to completely bend space time. We saw that a little Rolo(who along with Suzaku and Lelouch makes a brief cameo) but it got more powerful. Speaking of Lelouch, it was sort of bittersweet seeing him. It made me feel like that the ending of the original meant less because not only was he alive but all his work was undone. As far as I can tell, Nunally was replaced pretty quickly and Europia went into war with Brittania. Also Ayano got cock blocked hard, and I was rooting for her even if it was way less likely.

Anime I'm (probably) going to watch Summer 2016

So another anime season is soon to be ending, and yet another new one is to begin. It's summer, and what else is there to do in summer, other than watching anime? And this is the season I'm most hyped for since I don't know when. We have a lot to look forward to this summer, so let's just jump into it, shall we?
I'll first start listing the sequels (and a prequel), then the new series.
Last spring we got to see something new and delicious in the anime Food Wars, where we followed Souma, an aspiring and energetic young boy who was tossed into an elite cooking school after his father left and closed the restaurant, on his journey to become the head chef in his family's restaurant. This season will continue where the first season left off. I really liked the first season and I'm looking forward to this one. Be sure to watch the first season before this if you're going to watch it. The adventure shounen anime "The Seven Deadly Sins" gets a new series... but it's only 4 episodes. These four episodes will probably cover the only thing left unanswered from season one, which is the search for the seventh deadly sin. This one was also a good one, and, because I really like overpowered characters, Meliodas was perfect as a main character for me. Just as the one over, it's probably smart to watch the first season before you watch this one. In this series we follow the prince of Pars, Arslan, and his loyal general, Daryum, on their journey to take back their kingdom after Arslan's father, the king of Pars was betrayed and lost his kingdom to one of his most trusted officials. This one got very varied response from the watchers, but I believe this was one of the most interesting anime in the Spring 2015 season, and I'm looking forward to it, although it's only 8 episodes long. This one will probably continue where the first one left off, so go watch the first season. Handa-kun is a prequel to the slice of life comedy anime "Barakamon" where we are introduced to the short-tempered calligraphy genius Seishuu Handa. When his calligraphy was called "unoriginal" by one of the judges in a calligraphy contest, he lost his temper and punched the judge. He was then punished by his father and sent to the Goto Islands, far from the citylife in Tokyo he was used to. This time we will see Handa six years prior to "Barakamon" as a high schooler. (sadly, probably without Naru :( ) I really loved Barakamon and it made me laugh every episode, and seeing Naru and Handa together made my heart melt multiple times. Excited! I don't think it's necessary to watch Barakamon before this, but you should either way, since it's really good!
Aaaand now... on to the new series!
ReLife is a story about Kaizaki Arata, a 27 years old jobless man. He had a traumatic experience at his last job, and now he fails at every jobinterview he takes. Then one day he get the offer to be a subject of an experiment called "ReLife". This experiment will let you relive your high school life by using a youth serum developed by ReLife Reaserch Institute. When I saw the news of this getting a series, I was so happy. I was literally reading the manga the moment I noticed the announcement. I'm really excited for this one(probably second on my hype list), and the web manga is amazing. Naho Takamiya, a high school girl, receives a letter from herself ten years in the future one day. The content of the letter describes every single event of the day. One of them is the enrollment of a transfer student, Kakeru Naruse. The letter states that the future Naho has many regrets, and it tells her to not make the same mistakes as her, and what to do to not make the same mistakes. Soon after I finished the manga, this was annouced(awesome timing, right?). I adored the manga, even though it was a shoujo and I'm a guy. It has a nice touch of sci-fi and the drama is top notch. Plz be good. This one is my number one most hyped anime for the Summer 2016 season, btw. From the legendary author of One Punch Man, ONE, comes another comedy anime: Mob Psycho. The story followes Kageyama Shigeo, aka "Mob", an 8th grader with psychic abilities. But because of all the negative attention he kept receiving from the public, he began to keep his abilities to himself. His one and only purpose is to become the friend of a girl in his class, Tsubomi. Mob Psycho 100 is going to be an anime with a lot of excpectations from people because it's from the same author as the famous One Punch Man, but will it live up to them? Who knows. I'm excited for it, especially because of the psychological tag, which is one of my most liked genres. Here comes another series by Key; their ninth visual novel, Rewrite. It is a action, comedy, romantic higschool anime following Kotarou Tennouji, a highschooler who has the supernatural ability to rewrite any part of his body to multiply strength or speed. Er mah gerd, another Key adaption. As Key is one of my favourite things in this world, I have really big excpectations for this. However, as their last one, Charlotte, were kind of dissapointing, I'm able to lower them some. Can't wait! This anime is about the teacher and lone father Kouhei Inuzuka, and his life with his daughter Tsumugi. A series of events lead them to a reastaurant run by the mother of one of Kouhei's students, Kotori, who does her best to feed them in her mothers absence. After this, the three of them begin to meet up and cook together. It reminded me of the anime Usagi Drop and the manga My Girl, which are both great, but I'm going into this one without any knowledge of it, really. But it looks nice, so why not?
So that concludes my small(not really) blog entry about Anime I'm (probably) going to watch Summer 2016. Thanks for reading! (^▽^)

So today, I was in the Vendor's hall for an anime con I was at. They were selling wall scrolls, so I looked through The book of what they had available, and I saw one of Another, which is currently my favorite anime. My mom described the poster as," Two cute girls." She barely got a glance at it. I got the scroll, and then after we finished in the Vendor's hall we dropped the stuff we got off in the car. Afterwards since we had time for the meetup I wanted to go to, we wandered into a panel that was about to start. It was called, 'Underrated animes.' I found it quite enjoyable. We finished about half an hour early, so we had a Q&A for the last half hour. So this guy asked about how popular Another was. To which the person who was hosting the panel said,"It's pretty popular, it's pretty rare to find a horror anime and a good one at that." Later my mom was talking with my dad when we got back and she said,"I hadn't realized Another was a horror anime when I looked at the wall scroll picture." To clarify, the wall scroll was of the main character,( I can't remember his name), and Misaki Mei, the other main character/main supporting character. For those of you who have seen it the characters have a very cutesy art design. I think that the reason they made the characters so cutesy is that they wanted to have a contrast between the characters and the dark plot/ dark things going on around them. Or it was to kinda balance out the horror with an ever present warm cutesy element. I also think that they did this because they wanted the creepy or scary parts to stand out a lot more, and thus increasing the scare factor.

Background: As many stories do, this one also starts with at a young age, maybe it even started before I was born, but from as far back as I can remember I wished I could have had a normal name, a normal life, but as many things in life, it just wasn't to be. The family gold, yes an ironic last name, a rare and expensive material, with such a name one could debate saying that the person having the name is as rare and expensive as gold, now rare I can consider myself to be, my parents however are not. The name itself can't be further from the truth, we were poor, dirt poor. Now the name itself isn't abnormal, even my first name Melissa is considered rather normal, but for a 18 year old girl looking back it just doesn't fit. Now so far the story is still rather normal, the individual things pointed out are not rare or abnormal in any way, the combination of everything together just makes me have those thoughts of wanting to have had a normal life. For now let's just continue the story. My mother, Mimi Gold, a name that I have used and still use every now and then, she was incarcerated, a fancy word meaning she is locked up in jail. She had been put there for a bunch of armed robbery cases, we never really heard from her, no letters, no visits, it was like growing up without a mother at all. Now this can still be considered rather normal, many children grow up with one of their parents in prison, but then there we also have my father, his name isn't important, let's just call him Mr. Gold. My father, a real piece of work, always drunk, always angry about something, be it about the money lost by gambling, running out of liquor, or if other adults had been exchanging words with him. If I only got shouted at, then it had been a good day, mostly it ended with me getting beaten up. Naive that I was I did put up with this and smiled like the little girl I was, pretending everything was fine. It sort of was fine, I was durable more so then many others that I seen being beaten up, especially by my father, I just never thought much of how I could handle this better. I hated the sounds that those hits made, I hated the sounds people around me made, I could drawn them out, ignore their existence, the only thing I couldn't silence was my own voice, always sounding loudly in my head. Considering the situation of our family I guess one could still call this rather normal, I did go to school, I did smile, I was the dumb sweet child that I thought I had to be. Sadly my situation didn't provide me with many friends, even less that cared what would happen to me. The older I got, the more I got beaten up. Slowly I started to learn that I could draw from this inner sound, use it with my voice to create something new, a scary ability for a child, something that nobody else processed. I couldn't tell anybody, I still can't. I looked everything up online at school, looked at books, watched TV for any clue, but nothing really was shown about sound being able to turn into something else. The closest resemblance was the mention of mutants, rare cases of humans evolving, gaining something new, feared by the general masses. Especially since Day Zero, I was ten at that time, a group of those mutants attacked Manhattan which ended up in chaos. I was happy we lived in a trailer park in Shoshoni, a far cry away from Manhattan, but since then the opinion of mutants has dropped significantly. If what is going on with me is connected to that, then I'm better off with nobody finding out. When I turned thirteen I guess I had enough of the beatings and the problems, I decided to run away from home, best choice I ever made. Took me a few days to find my way to New York, the place of new beginnings, sadly the American dream is lost for many at that place, life on the streets is hard after all, to hard for even me, I was better off as Mimi, my consciously created though self, told you my mother's name would come back somewhere in the story, the only thing I really have left from her. Now as Mimi I could handle the streets, steal some money, con some idiots, it wasn't the best life, but hey it was a life. Well the though life changed when I was fifteen, met a nice boy, fell in love and all that crap, he was studying in New York, had rich parents, took care of me. With him I could be Melissa again, no need to act though. He had some shady friends and meetings but naive that I was I didn't pay attention to that. Until police one day broke down the door and searched the apartment, finding a lot of illegal contraband. It wasn't much of a shock that he had some illegal activities going on, but it was a shock that he pinned everything on me. I had no chance in court, his parents rich as they are hired an amazing attorney for him and well I ended up being shipped off to youth detention. There I was a 16 year old girl once again betrayed and once again alone. The youth detention center was another hard place to be, lot's of gang related people, lot's of violence and the officers working at it didn't care about anything, they mostly just ended up betting about who would beat up who in a fight. As you can see this wasn't a place for Melissa, so I had to be Mimi once more. First weeks in I was left alone pretty much aside from the usual push around, until I ran into some older woman thinking they were in charge, sure showed them not to mess with Mimi, beat them all up one by one, served them right for trusting an appearance, trust is not something one can afford after all.... funny how I used to try trusting. Anyway one year into my sentence some people caught aflame and burned out, appeared not only people inside this center did, outside was chaos, apparently around 2 million people just caught aflame, many of them mutants, it's scary how that happened, I always wondered what happened there. So far I have managed to keep what I had inside a secret, not using it, not trying to get attention on myself. The world is a scary place for one such as myself, since that day a lot of people got even more scared of mutants, although there are not as many left as there used to be. Another half year later I'm out of this hell hole again, luckily before I turned old enough to be transferred into something tougher. Outside not much changed, the people are afraid of the unknown, I'm still poor and used to be homeless. So I started to work in the only thing I have experience in... sound, playing some music at small bars under the name Songbird, it was easy enough to pick up an instrument... singing somehow comes naturally, it always had been although I guess I forgot to add that in my story. Although the voice inside never stops screaming out. It landed me with just about enough money to rent a room. Aside from that work I have no choice but to steal every now and then to keep my head above the water. Now as I said, it's far from a normal life that I had hoped for, and with the fear of mutants as it is it might just get even weirder if they find out what I can do. I was born under the wrong stars I guess... It's not like anybody is listening anyway... sign another day, another store to steal from....

Top 100 Anime/Manga Series

So as the title says, this post provides a list of my current top 100 favorite anime/manga series, complete with an image and description of why I love the anime and/or manga for every entry on the list. You may be asking why I would find the need to make a top 100 list. Well, there’s a story behind it: A few months back, a couple of guys came over for some tabletop gaming at our house for the first time. They were talking to me in our game room and one of them asked what Collectable Card Games (CCGs) we are into. I said, “We (my wife and I) don’t really play any. We both used to play Magic, but don’t really play anymore. I’m not really into that sort of gameplay.” (I do actively collect the My Little Pony CCG, but no one really plays so I didn’t find the need to mention it.) He then said, “Oh, well, you know they’ve brought out a new version of the Dragon Ball Z card game!” (He sees the anime wall scrolls in the house and seems to think this might be a way to entice me into getting back into CCGs.) I respond, “I’m not really that big of a DBZ fan.” And the two guys look at me like I’m some kind of alien for a second then say, “So your wife is the big anime fan then.” “No, I’m the one who got her deep into anime. I liked DBZ well enough back in the day, but it’s not really one of my favorites anymore. It wouldn’t even be in my Top 100.” And the other guy was like, “You have a Top 100?!” So yeah, that’s how we got here. A conversation with a couple of casual anime fans planted the idea in my head and made me feel like it must be done. Just a quick description before I get into this thing, each entry in the top 100 is for the overall series/franchise. For example, my Evangelion entry includes the original TV series, the End of Evangelion movie, and the new Rebuild movies. The link provided is either the most relevant entry in the series for why I love it or just the first part of the series. So anyway, let’s get started!
And that’s it! I’ve made a Top 100 list of my favorite anime and manga series! Hope some people found it fun to go through. If you actually read every word I wrote, damn, thanks! You must have either been really bored or I’m a more interesting writer than I thought. This list will likely evolve and I might post an update it a few years. I have it on an Excel spreadsheet for easy adjustments. So anyway, until next time!

Hatewatch special: Re:zero Episode 1-7: how to drive Ace insane one episode at a time

The current season of Spring 2016 has generally been a bore; almost everything airing is either really boring or executed poorly. At best, Flying Witch offers a relaxing atmosphere combined with some interesting details here and there. At worst, there is one series that piss me off like no other; a series so asinine and completely engulfed in its self-convinced intelligence and put no stop in employing whatever poor writing techniques while maintaining the pretention of telling an actual story. Episode by episode, this series has managed to drive me to the point of actually putting the effort of documenting everything I hate about this show, Re:Zero Being a part of the endless wave of shitty Light Novels adaptation crashing upon the anime industry wreckage that this show is, of course it would feature yet another generic premise and if you weren’t sharp enough to see this from the synopsis, it’s SAO. MC-kun is summoned into another world, found his fated bitch and then shit happens, that kinda stuff. There’s so little novelty left in this I actually think people stopped giving a shit about whatever variation they try to come up with. What seems to make this show appealing, to whoever actually decide to watch this appears to be because it features time travel. Although there’s undoubtedly good reasons to be investing in stories with such a complex and difficult plot point and the outcome, if executed correctly, can be greatly rewarding; this double edged sword turns upon the writer easily the moment he makes a mistake. For every Madoka or Steins Gate (bar the last 2 episodes), there are a gazillion series that trip over itself in its attempt to line up the disjointed storyline. For example, look no further than last season’s “Hype anime” Boku dake Inai Machi, or ERASEthisanime. In the climactic moment of the last arc, the series failed to connect its previous arcs into a cohesive and guided narrative, instead having to make up some idiotic character reasoning and ridiculous plot convenience to set up the final showdown. The thing is, in a time travel series assuming the character retain his memory, the emotional stake increase with each repetition and as such raise expectation so high that any series unable to meet this will just crumble under its own ambition. With Re:zero, the series is seriously inept at even understanding what its emotional stakes are. Each repetition doesn’t build upon the next, they occur randomly as if the main character doesn’t really remember what happened the last time. Essentially it makes a big waste of time for anyone not watching this series for the sheer purpose of watching a series featuring time travel. Now I know episode 7 (the latest as of this being written) did feature some sort of development, which I will address later; however, this doesn’t change that the first 6 episodes are utterly devoid of any progress and for all I know the new arcs will probably start out the same. The script of this show is really what drive me insane, however. Surpassing even the likes of Subete F ni naru or fellow LNs’ endless exposition, Re:zero carve itself into my heart as something that manage to piss me off everytime someone opens their mouth. For the rest of this paragraph, I will try to demonstrate how the dialogues of this show goes. The script is utterly overlong and overstuffed, for reasons I can’t comprehend but can’t resist to contemplate within my head to make myself sound extremely reasonable; every dialogue never seems to end but contain very little meaningful or significant content, making everything seems to last forever; reasons for which I will probably assume that author, like all other shitty LN authors, want to fabricate the pretention of being smart just by presence of many words, which is clearly not an effective strategy; I have also heard that source material is seriously long despite being written in the span of only 2 years, which is absolutely mind boggling and makes me question as to how does one even read the novel with even longer and more meaningless paragraphs, maybe the person like to read a lot but I don’t see why he can’t just read something more entertaining than walls of hollow text. The show is full of dialogues like this, infested with run on sentences, nonsense expositions within expositions that get followed up with more nonsense talking, all the while offering 0 value to the plot or characters. The generic excuse of character interaction doesn’t apply here either as there’s no attempt to characterise anyone or deepen character relationship, unless you consider MC-kun repeating the same pick up lines development or something. As if this isn’t bad enough, this series made the decision to even include shitty meta humour that just seems to be in every fucking LN these days. Look, series like monogatari makes a fortune with it because it actually do something with the trope. JUST BEING SAFE AWARE DOESN’T MAKE YOU A GOOD PARODY. The seemingly useless dialogues in monogatari always carry much more metaphorical meaning and actually get incorporated into the arc later on. Re:Zero decides to be even more obnoxious than that, however, it doesn’t even use it for parody purpose. In any given scene, the main character will just mention about how it would be totally like an anime if this were to happen next and things proceed just as he said, which is often not even meant to be interpreted as funny. It’s not clever; it’s not subversive; it’s just calling to the fact that it knows everyone knows this shitty trope will happen. How does anyone watching this show not get at least insulted by this is beyond me. It’s this tendency to put up the front of being aware of what they’re doing that puts my cynicism into overdrive; as a result whatever poor writing device they use turn the series even more grating. For example, the first arc featured 4 repetitions, or 80 minutes worth of content. Despite showing that MC-kun is aware of being “trapped in a fantasy” he cant figure out for shit that he returns to a check point everytime he dies; despite consistently showing his resolution to accomplish what he seeks to do, things ended up getting resolved because he got lucky and met the deus ex machine in the last repetition. Any series with an actual ounce of brain would have featured a planned path towards solving the problem; why not have him explore the extent of his power, why not have him at least conjure a list of possible courses of action and test them out. But no, the series feel like you will enjoy the talking and take whatever dumb Deus Ex Machina it use as genius. It’s at this point that I’d like to address episode 7, which was certainly different and was bad in a whole different way. It’s not something new to the series, however, but rather one that became obvious because the issue of coherence is finally put to the front. Even in the first arc, there was this part MC-kun got cornered by generic bullies and for some reason he only managed to beat them in the second repetition, never again. There are various examples throughout the series; random things that are mentioned out of the blue that never become relevant after its utterance. Anyway, the issue with episode 7 is that it assumed that the audience and the MC has cultivated enough emotional weight from the past repetitions for a turning point, which isn’t true. Firstly, there was never any reason to care about any of the characters that appeared in this arc; they simply were there and talked with MC-kun. Secondly, there has never been any sort of significant relationship established that the episode try to show he cherished; all we have seen is a 2 second flashback randomly inserted that we don’t even understand the circumstances. And thirdly, the “emotional breakdown” is utter phony, because simply he never tried to begin with. Did we see him go through painstaking and emotionally crushing repetitions of trying to communicating with them, each with more effort than the next, trying to understand them? No. Therefore there was no reason he should even feel betrayed. If you felt sorry for him then I feel sorry for you because you’re a gullible sack of tears. As expected of the quality of the writing, the series has no themes to speak of. Even in search anything of resemblance to a purpose the series seem to offer nothing. Is it about having a journey in a new world and experience the beautiful parts of it? Doesn’t seem like it. Is it about showing the emotional strain of a person retaining the memories that others do not? Not really, he doesn’t seem to care about much more than getting laid with waifu archetype-chan (or befriend her friends I guess). Is it about constructing an intriguing mystery with an answer constantly eluding our protagonist no matter how hard he try every time? Apparently not, he doesn’t try and there has been nothing worth considering a mystery (or even presented as one). There isn’t anything I can gather that can come even close to a narrative purpose so here’s my proposal as to how this abomination came into existence. The author wanted to write a self-insert fantasy about meeting cute girls in fantasy land that features time travel but he also reads SAO reviews so he try to disguise it as best he can with: “”Dark”” themes. Unfortunately, blood and gore do not make themes, and including them doesn’t make the series mature. If anything, this create a whiplash between what happens 90% of the episodes and the random edgy moments that offers nothing other than just being there. MC-kun, whose name I believe is Subaru, is exactly like the show, terrible. Many parts of his characterisation done poorly I have discussed before; his motivations are shallow, being nothing more a desire getting into a girl’s pants; his actions, in conformity with the plot, puts the pacing of the show at snail’s pace and his development is essentially a simple realisation he could have made back on episode 2 if he wasn’t preoccupied with trying to get into Emilia’s pants time and time again. We know nothing of his character outside his self-introduction as some NEET who work (so not a NEET) and he’s fit. In spite of this, the show assumes we are supposed to care about what even happens to him (episode 7) which is nothing short of insulting. As with all LNs, the side characters are either useless damsel waifu archetypes or useless characters who exist for the purpose of exposition. With all that said, it’s very confusing to me as to why this show is liked. At the time of writing this, Re:zero is has an average rating of 8.56 on MAL, ranking 78. It’s also the 3rd most popular for the Spring season, following the second season of Attack on Titan and Boku no Naruto Ripoff. There is a lot to be said about the reliability of MAL statistics but I can never seem to get a grasp of a well substantiated reason why someone would consider RE:zero to be great. It’s usually either “I like the concept”, “the girls are cute” or “I like how it’s dark”, all of which I have addressed above. If episode 7 was to be episode 2 I could see why someone would be invested in whatever the MC attempts with his power but this is not the case. How someone manages to sit through the first 6 episodes of absolute nothingness and finds it interesting baffles me. Going into the rest of the series, I plan to keep an open mind. Episode 7 even with all it problems does seem suggest the possibility the show might actually go somewhere now. Whether or not this potential can be realised is up to the author, whom as you can tell I really don’t truth or respect.
