Winter 2016 First Impressions

So we are now almost a month into the Winter season and all the scheduled shows have at least 3 episodes aired, so it is time for first impressions. Overall, I think this season is one of the weaker seasons with mostly average to slightly good titles but barely any title which really blowed my mind. Some shows however show potential and can turn out quite good in the end. Now let's give short reviews about the titles I have seen. Probably in my opinion the weakest show this season. It looks like a bad mashup of Rail Wars, Psycho Pass and Gachaman Crowds. The show is episodic so far and has a really boring plot. The characters are really bland and you don't feel attached to any of them and they don't awake any interest. The main character especially gives the impression of a diva-bitch and is really annoying. The animation is okay, but not exactly good either, but at least it is not something ugly. The opening song by Akino is really good and feels like a waste to be used for such a show. I don't expect anything good coming out of this. 3/10

As the first season, it is a very calm and mostly relaxing shoujo Anime. It focuses a lot on romantic relationships and it has a lot of cute and beautiful scenes. The art style is a bit different from what Shoujo titles often look like, but it looks really nice and fits the general idea of the show. The new opening is again a very relaxing songs which perfectly matches the atmosphere. Depending on how the romance aspect gets outlined in the later part, this can be a very good title this season. 7/10

The second season continues right after where the first ended. Like the prequel, it is purely comedy-based with subtle plot lines, which I find only partially funny to be honest, but there are quite a few scenes which are hilarious and give me good laughs. All in all, nothing really changed in contrast to the prequel and it basically remains its style. 6.5/10

I was looking forward to this show because of the good PV and visuals. The story with the Gravi-shoes and the flying circus is really cool, and despite being a visual novel adaptation I find it way more unique than most of the other adaptations out there. It has a slow start and mainly focuses on introducing the characters and the sport, the flying circus, to the watcher. Despite being a visual novel adaptation, this is not a Harem. The characters are likeable although they follow archetypes. The MC is mostly boring though, but we still don't know much about him and I think he will get more development later on. Animation and art style are superb and a huge plus for the show. The opening song "Contrail ~Kiseki~" by Kawada Mami is very nice. It is a different one than from the novel but it still fits very well. For now I have a good feeling about this show. 7.8/10

Also known as "Erased", this is the Anime which gets most of the hype this season. The plot has to do with time traveling and reliving your past to change it for the better (Hello, Steins;Gate). It has been done before a lot of times and is not a unique premise, but that doesn't mean it is a minus. The execution is good so far and it is really interesting. What I like the most are the thought processes and monologues of the MC. Despite the MC there are no interesting characters though, and I don't yet know what to think of the girl he wants to save by reliving his childhood. The art style and character designs are decent, but nothing outstanding. The opening song is really cool and goes along with the show well. 8.3/10

This is one of the shows which have a good and very interesting first episode and then drop in the second episode. The action parts are decent and have a faster pacing. The story still has a lot of plotholes and it is like a scrambled jigsaw puzzle. The show has uninteresting characters with a crappy design. I can't really feel attached to them, and there is yet no mention of the MCs sister, which is supposedly alive but not even the MC himself ever speaks about it. It is like one character which appeared important at the start gets taken out of the story really quick and doesn't show up again. The CGI is okay, but not very good. The opening song from Konomi Suzuki is a good one, although there have been songs by her which were a lot better and more powerful.4.8/10

Simple comedy show which features a boring MC and an autistic female candy fanatic talking about candy all the time and making jokes around it. Sometimes you can see the sexiness of said girl in a few nice fanservice scenes. That are basically the episodes until now in a nutshell. The comedy isn't bad but not really hilarious either, but it is still somewhat enjoyable to watch. Art style and designs are fine, but the opening song is one of the weaker of this season. There is really not much to say about this show. 6.7/10

Very interesting Sci-Fi show with a very cool MC and an interesting setting. The idea with a new dimension being discovered which provides an unlimited source of energy which are distributed into so-called "coils" is really cool. The danger with the illegal coils and the mysteries evolving around them are making this very exciting to watch. Additionally there are still a lot of secrets about the MC to be uncovered, for example the fact why he hates coils so much. The fact that he gets a teammate which is a coil-running android is so contradicting that you can only wonder where the relationship between them is going. The setting and the art are done very well and work very well together which give this futuristic-city-vibe a good touch. The opening song is something really special, having this futuristic and Drum'n'Bass vibe which fit perfectly to the show. All in all I'm having high expectations here because it is a very enjoyable show so far. 8.8/10

I'm not really feeling this one (yet). Pretty bland story and characters which are only slightly interesting to say the least. It is hard to tell who is the MC in this story. Aoto's backstory with him having a psycho-brother who killed his parents feels way too forced to be dark, and Aoto being an edgelord most of the time doesn't make it better. Midori's backstory in the most recent episode was way better but still far from being very good. The action scenes look mostly generic and have a mediocre CGI. Opening song is really good though.5/10

Pretty much the same vibe than the two previous cours, now the story is slowly progressing towards some conclusions, for example Saika and Celty's head which remained mysteries for a big part of the show. I'm glad the quality didn't drop in comparison to the prequels, and on top of that we get a great opening song by FLOW.8/10

The anime enters the arc where Itami's squad is going to fight the Red Dragon, which is shown to have wiped out several villages including Tuka's. It has a lot to do with her seeking her deceased father and even mistaking Itami for him. Prior to that they found out that there are japanese slaves in the other world who got taken hostage when they invaded Japan during the first episode of the first season. With Tyuule a new villain gets introduced which acts as a slave in the other world but is scheming in the shadows. Maybe it is just me but I think the animation quality did drop slightly. The new opening which is again by Kishida Kyoudan is epic, not as epic as the first one but still porn for your ears.8/10

Reading Shingeki no Kyojin: Before the Fall, started liking the characters by the end of chapter 3, thanks to the cover of chapter 4 I remember it's Shingeki no Kyojin, and I can't take a like for no one, cause they are all doomed. --- Lendo Shingeki no Kyojin: Before the Fall, comecei a gostar dos personagens pelo final do capítulo 3, graças à capa do capítulo 4 eu lembrei que isso é Shingeki no Kyojin, e que eu não posso gostar de ninguém, porque estão todos condenados.
