TOP 7 WEEK: YOUTUBERS
TOP 7 WEEK
To commemorate the 7th month of the year, I will post 7 consecutive tops 7’s on my MAL blog page. The content will focus on anomalous ideas which don’t neatly fit into any other format with accompanying low effort descriptions for each entry.
TOP 7 YOUTUBERS
I've spent 80% of my waking life watching YouTube videos. Here are my current favourite channels.
7. WeedleTwineedle
Weedle is a legendary Poke-tuber. Their content focuses on Pokémon battle videos showcasing inventive strategies which are edited to incredble comedic effect, using an eclectic range of visual and audio memes, anime sound effects and references to other YouTubers, all brought to life with an amateurish sense of masking and timing. Drawing from their ambiguous gender and sexuality, is a fascination with drag which makes its influence on the inserted meme clips. Weedle rewards the consistent viewer by including several inside jokes and in-house memes which will go over the heads of uninitiated viewers, maintaining a small, but dedicated fanbase. Ranging from wholesome, longer videos to shorter, indefinitely rewatchable showdown clips, Weedle is among the most versatile and entertaining Pokémon YouTubers I've ever seen.
6. timtam 2400
Timtam is a fascinating case. He’s a K-On megafan who is particularly passionate about his beloved waifu Azusa, making several love letters, songs, and confessions to her. The most interesting thing about these videos isn’t the ‘cringe’ as you might expect, but how timtam reveals his emotional and interpersonal struggles which are explored through these videos. On the baseline, they are absolutely genuine and sweet, and as a fellow K-On fanatic I can relate, but he often structures these love letters like a conversation with himself about his own conflicting shame around loving such anime characters. He suffers from alexithymia and autism which makes his emotional identification difficult, so his outlet for his difficult feelings are these cathartic videos, where he understands himself through the creative process. Try to laugh with him rather than at him, I guarantee his love for K-On will be infectious.
5. Mumkey Jones
Mumkey Jones has worn many different masks throughout his YouTube career. His early anime reviews take a parodic angle to traditional YouTube media reviews to comment on a range of socio-political issues, with a permanent sense of irony, edginess and self-deprecating humour. Mumkey's main skill is integrating this humour into a universe of his own characters, inside jokes and memes to reward long time viewers. His turbulent social and personal life is more entertaining and dramatic than any reality TV show I’ve ever seen, having burned every bridge he’s ever made, gone through several manic/depressive episodes on camera, and had all his channels deleted multiple times. However, he always somehow rises from the ashes, with his rock being his gaming channels, which feature by far his best work. He takes a podcast approach to the commentary with laid back and honest delivery, while never ceasing to be hilarious by using his comedic flairs to set up gags, revealing embarrassing stories from his awkward social life and plain shitposting. I always look forward to his videos when they're posted daily.
4. KSI
Yes, I watch a channel aimed at 12-year olds, I’m not ashamed. In fact, I began watching KSI as a 12 year old, when he made absurdly comedic Fifa gameplay videos, pranks and skits, all in his outlandish, polarising sense of humour. He’s among the most talented and versatile entertainers the UK has ever produced, having made several legendary videos which will surely be remembered as classics in years to come. Aside from his own endeavours, he’s remarkably generous, and has single handily helped the careers of countless UK YouTubers, whether financially, through cameos, or simply paving the way through his own popular content. Having traversed boxing, rapping and even acting as side projects, his underdog nature leads him to be the closest to a shounen protagonist in the entire website – someone who is instinctual, industrious and outlandish, yet achieves great heights against all the odds. His recent turn of content to a more PewDiePie esc cult of personality style is just as effective as his old stuff, successfully transitioning his outrageous sense of humour to reaction style videos. Above all else, KSI wears his heart on his sleeve, externalising his emotions for his audience to immediately connect with – everything is exaggerated to either comedic or dramatic effect to make him ever more honest and relatable.
3. Digi-née
I truly appreciate Digi’s principles; she makes content so viewers come to her rather than the reverse. This content varies from well written, over arching analysis, rambles about various topics which interest her, or huge categorisation videos to further reveal her tastes and ideals. Her transparency, absurd output and consistency are key to her success, and Digi has taken all three to the extreme. The intimate connection she has with her viewers is made possible by her honesty and ability to articulate her most complex thoughts, allowing other such like-minded people to connect with her based on her ability to voice the intangibles. Her commendable anime knowledge allows her to operate as an anime guru, which richens her most analytical content, but she also comes from a familar western anime culture which she externalises through her room decoration and personal aesthetic. While her content has meandered over the last few years, she is seemingly the only other person who is as self-obsessed as I am, and I’m excited to see where her identity and self-exploration will go in the future and how she continually helps me navigate though life.
2. Sidemen
Yes, I watch a channel aimed at 12-year olds, I’m not ashamed. The Sidemen have optimised the model of a YouTube friend group, cultivated over nearly a decade of trial and error. Without a better way to put it, these guys are the real life equivalent of K-On to me, in terms of a closely knit group of friends who become progressively closer through the slow process of their media output. However, The Sidemen take a more comedic and less intimate approach to their friendship, with seemingly infinitely many inside jokes, characters and memorable moments which are eternally rewarding to watch and rewatch. These guys make me feel like I’m part of their friendship group, and as much as I’m grateful to K-On for the same reason, I’m equally and continually grateful to the Sidemen. Their balanced variety of personalities, British humour and references are relatable to me on so many levels, but somehow separate themselves from the sea of other popular YouTubers through their collective honesty and transparency. With predictably consistent high-quality content and enriching social interactions which only get better with time, I’ve legitimately learnt more about how to interact in social groups from the Sidemen than any other resource, and I’m always thankful for that.
1. Psychology in Seattle
This is cheating because Psychology in Seattle is strictly a podcast, but they primarily operate on YouTube these days so I’m counting them. Hosted by Kirk Honda, this channel posts psychology-based podcasts which teaches concepts related to psychotherapy, details principles like attachment theory, and explores personality disorders like narcissism. With Kirk’s highly educated background and professions as a therapist, professor and now podcaster, he brings a new bar of knowledge and communication skills which are simply a cut above everyone else on the platform, while also outputting machine levels of content. His podcasts outline ways to understand the human psyche in strictly academic terms in a free flowing, conversational manner, allowing the viewer to think in the systematic ways psychologists and therapists do towards their clients, so we can eventually turn that knowledge inwards and understand ourselves. His podcasts have been nothing short of revolutionary, having given me the tools to understand the roots of my behaviours, become more empathetic and compassionate towards others, and take steps to improving my faults. His listenable delivery, mix of fun and heavy discussion, personal stories, interesting guests, commentary of world issues, and general words of wisdom have been instrumental to my development over the last few years. While his recent videos have tended towards reality TV reaction videos which have attracted an unfortunate new audience of unstable middle-aged mums, his core audience of industry professionals and psychology-fascinated students have remained as a tightly knit community which is so rewarding to be a part of.

Mononoke Hime
Sayonara!
