Interestingly, I found in anime that I like that is not really a genre. It's strong women characters. What does Legend of Korra, Black Lagoon, Good Luck Girl, Psychopass Attack on Titan, and Pumpkin Scissors have in common? Strong women characters.
This choice of protagonist seems to be lacking in popular TV shows. The only one I could think of was Law and Order SVU or maybe House of Lies. But that is it. I don't see GOT centered around strong female leads and neither, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Modern Family, 2 Broke Girls, the Middle, or Big Bang Theory.
What surprises me is people actually buy into this live action stuff in 2015. Companies invest millions to promote 1950s hollywood ideas. An anime can cause a quarter of a Live action TV show and still be more forward thinking than most live TV nowadays. To hire crews, action doubles, camera men, and sound designers does not make sense to me.
Unfortunately for every feminist anime there is about 300 more with sex shots, boobs, and fan service. It promotes the idea that anime and manga is perverted when anime to me is actually an equal playing field.
