This is the Three-hundredth-forty-eighth week of using the "Perfect Anime Girl Sheet". Notice: This Blog may contain Unmarked Spoilers.
Welcome back everyone. We're currently up high in the sky on Captain Liliana's ship. I managed to save Ririchiyo, but in the mean time got cornered myself. Luckily a certain video game hero has come to save us!
: And I know who it is! Can you let me tell them?
: Tell me too!
Sure, but first let's spoiler it so the surprise isn't spoiled!
: Wait, so you're saying you're using the spoiler for it's proper use and not just to build suspense.
Uhhhh...
: I knew it... Anyway, the girl who saved us was...
: FARIS SCHERWIZ!
*DUN DUN DUNN*
: You know, I was figuring that I'd know who that was. But I don't.
: Well, to be fair you don't play many video games. Or at least as many as Topaz and I do.
: I'm surprised that a pirate such as you hasn't heard of-TOPAZ!
What?
: Don't "what" me. You know exactly what my problem is!
Hey, it's not my fault that you don't have a MAL page! I had to find images SOMEHOW.
: Sure, and I get that this is the "speaking" image from my games. But it looks TINY compared to the others.
: Nothing wrong with being tiny! Topaz taught me that.
*Faris and Liliana look towards Topaz. Their eyes glance down at his crotch and both start to giggle.*
HEY! She means because I approve of her beautiful loli body. It's nothing to do with me!
: Suuuurrrreeee...
: Don't insult Topaz about the size of his m-m.. HIM!
Thanks for sticking up for me Ririchiyo.
: He'll get hard from it!
Et tu, Riri? Anyway, let's get back to the subject at hand. Faris's image.
: That's right! You'd better pick a better one immediately!
Alright then... *Topaz swipes across his screen a few times.* How is this one?
: Ugh. It's terrible. It looks like I don't even have a face! And instead a mask or something!
Picky picky. *he swipes some more* Better?
: Hey, I actually sort of like this one. Kinda big though, and I'm not sure if the chibi look is good for me.
: It seems so musical!
: Hey, your sword looks awesome!
I do guess it looks a little too wide. Perhaps THIS one will help.
: Ugh. This is even worse than that one I hated. I look all pixelly and terrible.
: You look like you'd fit in a certain webcomic.
: I like swords!
: Welcome to Corneria! Er, I mean, we should get back to the next image.
: I agree. *sighs* Can't any of these work out well?
Let's hope so. This one is the last one I could find.
: Well, it is pretty great. I like standing on Syldra head.
: The cute chibiness is great too. Incidentally chibi games need proper respect!
I agree.
: Well, now that you have a proper picture we can begin our battle. And you two had better not interrupt. Pirate Aesthetic 8th: Respect a one on one duel.
Don't worry, we'll stay out of it.
*Both Liliana and Faris draw their blades. They swordfight in nearly perfect unison, neither giving an inch. Their swords clang flawlessly. They even both use ropes to shoot upward and then start swordfighting on the mast of the ship.*
: Topaz! Start your blog!
You're right. This way I can hopefully break the stalemate you two have.
: No, I mean this way you won't be sitting there like a lump!
: She's got a point there...
Well, since she's giving me permission and I don't want to be a lump...
Head
Hair: Faris has two types of hairstyles and colors, depending on if you look at the sprite or the official art. I prefer her sprite as it's a mostly-free (if messy) long hair which is colored purple. It also covers her right eye if you look at it from the front, though it's not as distinct in the iOS port. When she's dressed as a princess she also has a ponytail, though it seems to be a wide one. She also gets a lot of various head wear due to jobs, some of which being a few mages hats or the white mage hood, ponytails as a dancer or iOS samurai, the silly not-Santa geomancer hat, and various others.
In the FMVs, original Theatrhythm, and original concept Faris is different. She's blonde for one, which is the biggest change. Her hair is also done up in a ponytail, being a bit more androgynous I suppose. Her hair also appears to be slicked back, with a wide forehead. She also has a few wisps of hair on the sides of her forehead, but they're not too interesting. Maybe it was playing Final Fantasy VI before this but this version seems a bit like Edgar from that game. I much prefer the purple color and style, though. It seems more classic and unique to her. The second Theatrhythm game, Curtain Call, is a good compromise as she has the ponytail look but with purple hair.
Grade: B
Eyes: Unfortunately the sprite isn't too great for this as her eyes are nothing but a few pixels large. I do like how they're green though I admit it's hard to tell. The original color is brown which is also good. I'm not a big fan of Amano's artwork (again she looks a lot like Edgar) but I do like how narrow her eyes are. Sadly Faris doesn't have a glasses option (or at least a visible one-she can equip the Silver Glasses just like any other character, but they don't show up on her sprite). Instead the closest is the mask with the blue mage job, but even then it doesn't show up too well.
Grade: B-
Face: Faris definitely has an androgynous face. She does have a somewhat large nose, but that happens with Amano art I think. Her lips are small though painted and stand out against her pale skin. Shape-wise her face is a bit shield-like or flat, though definitely not as bad as the image above would make you think.
Grade: B-
*Faris takes a few strikes of Liliana's sword, cutting her clothing slightly.*
: Curses! I guess I better bring out the big guns!
: Don't become a cannoneer! You'll lose out on a cool hat! Also the job is terrible.
: I didn't mean literally!
*Faris draws a second sword and holds it defensively.*
: Let's see how you can deal with my dual wielding!
: That certainly is impressive, but I think-
*Liliana makes a few quick strikes, but Faris blocks them with her main and offhand weapons easily.*
: Hmm, this may be more troublesome than I anticipated. But Pirate Aesthetic the 4th: Always accept a challenge!
: Heh, I was thinking the exact same thing...
: So "true" Faris has Ninja levels it seems. Wait, Topaz! That makes her a pirate ninja!
That is pretty cool!
: You don't understand! Now our blog will have to collapse into itself as there's no way we can handle this much awesomeness!
Don't worry. Didn't you notice the "Requiem" she played against Liliana's crew? She obviously has bard levels and that reduces her "awesomeness" by quite a bit.
: Those Spoony Bard levels!
: Stop complaining about my hobbies and get back to your blog!
Good point, we still have a lot to go through!
Body
Build: We have measurements! Though I'm not quite sure how accurate they are... From what I've seen, in the American version she's 5'7”, or 170 cm, but the Japanese Wikipedia states that she's 172 cm and I trust them more. For another reference the American Bartz is 5'10”; that's 178 cm and a bit taller than what the Wikipedia says at 176 cm. So America shrunk Faris while making Bartz taller, I disapprove of both choices. The Japanese site also claims that her weight is 53 kg which doesn't seem too bad (She's no chunky Salsa if that's what you're thinking xD). As far as her actual body goes, it's not all that impressive. She's androgynous and successfully poses as a male for quite sometime, until her reveal in a ship graveyard. Even the advance manual didn't give a hint to her true gender. We also don't have much to go on either.
Grade: C
Breasts: Again Faris doesn't do too well here, for the same reason that she doesn't show off too much. She at least has some, judging by the FMVs, but that's not too much of a guess. Maybe she's like a lot of other reverse traps and is really busty, but we'll never know I guess.
Grade: C
Clothes: Once again Faris has a distinct difference between her sprite and official art. On her sprite she wears a dark blue sleeveless jacket with a green shawl over it, gold gauntlets, and a blue skirt. At one point in the story she also wears a yellow ball dress, though she doesn't enjoy it. In the official art she's a lot more pirate-like with a black long nautical coat and a striped purple scarf over a red shirt with a skirt and/or white trousers. Her arms have several pieces of spiked bronze armor and she has tall, black armored boots with dragon wings at the ankles. It's really neat, at least to me. Lightning from FFXIII also wears an outfit based on this which is called the “Splendid Admiral” set, and Faris also wears this in the Theatrhythm games. She also has loads of job outfits, including some cute ones like the mages or geomancer as well as cool armored ones like the dragoon. And yes, she can be a pirate ninja. In the Legend of the Crystals OVA her ghost is wearing some sort of bikini armor, though she has clothing under it to hide her figure. Overall it's not too interesting or favorable, but there's a lot to say about all the variety she wears.
Grade: B
*Liliana and Faris continue their battle, but Riri notices something unusual.*
: Wait a minute. If Faris can Dual Wield that's from the Ninja class, the ability to use Requiem from Bard, and the ability to use swords... HEY FARIS, WHAT JOB ARE YOU?
: Shouldn't it be obvious? I'm a Freelancer.
: Oh, I know that sort of job. Topaz is one of those.
I do guess I sort of have "Summon" and a form of "Mimic".
: I meant because you have NO JOB! (S-stop insulting Topaz just because he's such a bum. You'll never get on his good side like this).
I am very devoted to my hobbies!
: Sure you are... Speaking of which, why don't you get back to speaking about Faris?
Certainly!
*While Topaz continues Faris and Liliana continue their swordplay. Eventually they fall back down to the main part of the ship.*
: Wow, you're a better swordfighter than the last masculine crossdressing girl I had to face.
: You fought Sainyang?! Well, I guess she was a stowaway but still.
: Who? No, I mean Annelotte.
: Apparently “masculine” in Queen's Blade is a lot different than it means in other dimensions. *rolls eyes.*
: Enough expository banter! Now we fight like men!
*Liliana points her sword at Topaz.*
: And ladies!
*Points it at Ririchiyo.*
: And ladies who dress like men!
*Points it at Faris and returns to her battle.*
: Hopefully Lilana won't quote the Power Rangers before changing to her next form.
Hey Riri.
: *sigh* What?
Do you know what part of the ship we're standing on? Like by the steering wheel and all that?
: No, why?
The BRIDGE.
: Yeah, so?
And those two are BATTLING. And Liliana's ship is quite LARGE so-
: Stop trying too hard to make thematic jokes and get back to the blog.
Fiiinnee... *cough*
: And don't try to hide links behind coughing either!
Mind
Personality: Faris was lost at sea at a young age and adopted by pirates. Her actual name, Sarisa, was too complex for her to speak at the time so they heard “Farifa” and decided to name her Faris. She was raised as a male and grew up among pirates. At the age of fifteen she and her crewmembers were caught in a whirlpool. Not knowing what to do Faris dove in and returned with Syldra, a sea dragon. The two formed a sisterly bond and, with the help of Syldra, the ship was able to move without relying on the wind. As her crewmates were impressed by this they made her captain at such a young age. Five years later she gets some adventurers try and steal her ship, but she's able to capture them easily. This leads to Faris joining them on their travels to save the crystals. However, she eventually finds out that Lenna, one of the girls she's traveling with, is actually her long lost sister. As a result Sarisa is a Pirate Princess (or at least until the King dies); she's really a lot of interesting things xD. Her real name is “Sarisa Scherwil Tycoon”.
In her travels she has a few great personality-defining scenes. The first, as mentioned earlier, was in a ships graveyard. Now, earlier on if you went and visited the sleeping Faris in Tule you can have Bartz and Galuf, both males, become enamored at “his” beauty. Later on, after getting wet by going underwater in the ships graveyard they decide to strip Faris. This lead to her secret getting out, namely that Faris is female. While not as famous as a certain Samus incident this was a pretty big revelation at the time. Another great scene is when she picks on Bartz with the rope after he falls into an antlion hole when he left without her. She didn't want to remain back with her sister as being a princess isn't as important to her as traveling the world. Faris also gets a lot of great touching scenes with Syldra, and I like how you can get her as a summon in the third world.
Personality-wise Faris is a lot rougher than your average Final Fantasy heroine. She even gets her gender pronouns confused after her secret is revealed. She's brash, rough-spoken, and a bit rude, though this becomes better as the game goes on. That said she's loyal to her crew and is a strong leader. She might be reckless but she's also courageous. Her element is fire, after all. She does have cute moments as well. While she's never actually soft-spoken she does reveal her caring side later in the game. She eventually feels the weight of the world as much as the other Light Warriors, and she's defensive of her feelings and has a hard time expressing them. Interestingly Faris was originally supposed to be a female gambler named “Eva Scherwil”, but it was too hard to fit into the world so that idea went to the next game and became Setzer instead. That said, Amano says that Faris, as well as Terra, are his favorite designs. I'll also add that in the PS1 version Faris has a very deep pirate accent -arr matey and all that- but this is removed to be more accurate to the Japanese version in future games. This is also the game that called her true name "Salsa" and the lead "Butz" so it's obviously not the best (though definitely better than having Yang swear so much). Overall Faris is a cool pirate captain with a surprising amount of emotional scenes and is a lot of people's first reverse trap (or at least the second after Samus).
Gameplay-wise Faris is a balanced character. While her agility is good she's got average/balanced stats across the board. I tend to make her the Blue Mage or Time Mage of the party, but she's just as good with the melee-based classes as well.
Grade: A-
Libido: Faris's libido isn't really shown, but I assume that she's not too interested in it due to how she was raised. Lenna is the love interest in the game, not Faris.
Grade: C
Age: We actually have an age for Faris! Surprising I know, especially considering the time she was from. Faris is 20 years old, giving her a perfect score here. Though considering the game was created in 1992 and it's currently 2015...
: HEY! You can't make that judgment! Time doesn't pass like that in video games!
: Unless you're like Ryu or something whose totally an old man as his year of birth is officially 1964. He's even older than Topaz!
I don't know how I feel about you using me as an example...
Grade: A+
Total Grades: 67
Average score: 7.4
Final Grade: B-
*As Topaz finishes the blog Faris knocks Liliana's weapon out of her hands.*
: Mwahaha! Looks like I've one this and have proven myself as the superior pirate. Do you surrender?
: OHOHOHOHO! Perhaps you've underestimated me! I'll never lose!
*Liliana grabs the wheel of the ship and forces it to loop around. Crates slide all over aboard, smashing into Topaz and Riri. Eventually they slide off the ship, with Topaz taking 15 damage from the general ship debris.*
: Come! Black Chocobo!
*She whistles and swings onto her steed. She then flies toward Topaz and Riri.*
: Ohohoho! Pirate Aesthetic the 18th: Formidable opponents merit exhaustive research. And when I meet you next Topaz be prepared for a bigger battle!
*Liliana and her ship, with various small explosions happening on board, flies off into the sunset.*
: Grab my hand, Topaz!
*He attempts to do so, but his fingers slip through hers. Suddenly a loud dragon noise is heard, and a wind drake catches both Topaz and Ririchiyo.*
: Thank goodness!
At least we weren't cut in half by getting caught in mid-air.
: So THIS is where you were, Faris. You and Lenna were supposed to come to my castle for a ball and I find you out defeating sky pirates?
: You know those fancy things aren't my type of thing. Besides, it seems that Topaz really needed my help.
And I'm glad to have gotten it. But for now, I'd like to return home.
: We've had a busy few months!
: Alright then, just lead the way!
*Topaz directs Krile towards his house. Once there the wind dragon lands and Rika and Kimiko come out of his house.*
: Another Final Fantasy dragon? I sure hope that we won't end up naked again!
: I'm not even going to ask...
I have strange adventures! But thanks for taking us back home.
: Thank nothing of it. We should really get going, and you should return that bird to Cid and Mid.
: Do I have to? I'm pretty sure they were going to eat it...
: That's all in your head.
*The two fly off.*
: Well, now that you've saved me from Liliana and participated in two tournaments what are you going to do now?
I'm going to go play video games!
: You always default to those after adventures, don't you.
Yeah, but this one is a special one...
: Don't forget that there will be a bonus blog this coming Monday for Meganekko day! Mmmm, meganekkos...
