Spring 2015 Anime Season Wrap-up

The Spring 2015 anime season is over, and here is a summary of my thoughts on it: Ugh. I ended up watching only one of the new series to the end, “Danmachi”, aka, “Dungeons and Dummies”. My final rating is C. Not unexpectedly, Albino Jesus ended up powering up to God Level. If there is a sequel I won't be there. I ended up dropping both “Rinne” and “Arslan” at episode 8. I just couldn't stay awake for Rinne and once all of the Bad Guys in Arslan turned out to be idiot caricatures I lost all interest. Two other shows from prior seasons ended during the past couple of weeks, “Assassination Classroom” and “Anime de Wakaru Shinryounaika”. “Ass Class” turned out pretty much like the manga – okay during action scenes and melodramatic as mud during Moral Exposition. My final rating is B-, but I am unlikely to watch the next season because there is only one scene I want to see animated in the entire second half of the manga. “Anime de Wakaru” was a reasonably entertaining short and many of the dumb jokes worked okay. I think that that creators were smart in keeping each episode short and ending the series where they did. My final rating is C+. I am still watching a half dozen series that are continuing from various times in the past, including two from the distant past. “Sailor Moon Crystal” should finish up next month since there are only two episodes left. Even without all of the filler episodes of the original TV series this remake has seemed exceedingly long. My current rating is B-, and there is a big nostalgia factor in that. “Nihon Animator Mihonichi” is still going on with 24 short anime aired so far out of a planned 30. It has been on a bit of a break but should start up again in July. I haven't liked every one so far, but what I have liked have tended to be very good. Overall I am still rating it A for effort and delivery for the most part. “Kutsudaru” keeps on coming back unexpectedly. I've seen 42 episodes so far and I am not willing to say again that it is done until I see more definitive signs from NHK. It continues to be a smart and entertaining kid's short. My current rating is B. “Folktales from Japan” is still going at 167 episodes. I continue to be impressed that the series can bring something different in look and delivery each week. My current rating is B. “Meitantei Conan” and “One Piece” continue going. MC is at 782 episodes and OP is at 698. “Rumour on the Street” suggests that MC may finish up in the next year or so. That would be a good thing. OP appears to be headed on for the rest of the decade, which may not be such a good thing. But I am still giving both series ratings of A because they do continue to be solidly entertaining despite the passing decades.
